Product Description
Y: THE LAST MAN is the gripping saga of Yorick Brown, an unemployed and unmotivated slacker who discovers that he is the only male left in the world after a plague of unknown origin straight away kills every mammal with a Y chromosome. Accompanied by his harmful monkey and the mysterious Agent 355, York embarks on a transcontinental journey to find his girlfriend and learn why he is the last man on Planet.
Now, the entire critically acclaimed Y: THE LAST MAN saga written by Brian K. Vaughan, one of the writers of LOST, is collected into a series of oversized, hardcover editions. In this third volume, Yorick’s unbalanced sister Hero tracks him to San Francisco, only to find him seemingly succumbing to the male-killing plague after losing his still-unused engagement ring to agents of the Setauket Ring. Plus, Yorick, Agent 355 and Dr. Mann ship out across the Pacific to Japan in pursuit of Yorick’s stolen monkey Ampersand, whose innards may hold the key to mankind’s future

In 2002, all male beings died of something looking like an horrible, instant plague. That is, all males but Yorick and his capucine monkey. In a topsy-turvy world that has lost its yin (or is it its yang?), Yorick, helped by a black op girl and a doctor girl, travels across the USA and beyond to try and find a cure or at least an explanation for the incredible event. As for women, they try to survive in an half-empty world that up to now largely remained made for men. Set in 2004, the tale in this volume is excellent, co-creator Pia Guera and Goran Sudzuka take seemless turns at an art that, though simple, perfectly fits the tale. As for Brian K. Vaughan, he has to be praised for his handling of an ancient male fantasy (or nightmare?).

Needless to say I was tickled when my Amazon package arrived today – earlier than I thought, with Book Three of the Deluxe Edition of Y: The Last Man. I’m on a deployment in Iraq right now, so Amazon arrivals are permanently welcomed! Book Three of this series is simply incredible. I learned “Y” by manufacturing accident last year, when I saw Book Two prominently showed in my local library. I had missed Y when it came out, and checked out Book Two on a whim since the library didn’t have Book One. Having missed the origin of the series, I was still drawn in and able to pick up quickly the tale as it flowed along. Books One and Two are terrific – introducing you to a fantastic set of characters and then building the tension and excitement in their efforts and adventures to reach the West Coast. Book Three ratchets up the intensity. I simply could not place it down and finished it in a couple of hours. I like everything about this series – the writing is phenominal, the pencil work and tan are superb, and the characters draw you in immediately. I like all of them – the excellent, the terrible, and the hideous. This series exemplifies what a graphic novel should be. Get it now and find a place where nobody will bother you and delight in a terrific tale over the next couple of hours!

With the same fantastic quality and format as the first two deluxe editions, which is nice for homogeny’s sake, this is the best option for collectors and casual readers both. A large hardcover with a comes off dust jacket, heavy and high-quality pages, sturdy binding, and a bonus at the end (original speech from one of the episodes in this one), mean that there is small to discourage you from getting this edition. Volume three collects the fourth and fifth trade paperbacks (out of ten) of this extremely well loved series, and here the tale only continues to impress, and possibly improves.
In the tale-arc covered by “Ring of Truth”, we catch up with Yorick and Co. in San Fransisco (one of the few truly functional cities left in America) where Dr. Mann is approaching a major leap forwards in learning the reason why Yorick and Ampersand survived the extermination of all additional men. We also are treated to a small history for both Beth (Yorick’s girlfriend) and Hero (Yorick’s sister), as they become more central to the tale. A new group of ex-Culper Ring secret society types enters the fray here, as well as the previously-only-glimpsed ninja chick from Deluxe Edition #2, who is taking orders from some mysterious Boss, and manages to steal Ampersand . This is perhaps the most exciting of all the Y tale-arcs up to this point, and competes with “Safeword” for the most well loved for fans. [5-stars]
The second half of this book, also establish in the TPB “Girl on Girl”, follows Yorick and friends on a sea voyage across the Pacific in an attempt to reach Japan and liberate Ampersand. Needless to say, the journey turns out to offer a lot more adventure than 355, Dr. Mann, and Yorick would have liked, but it makes for an appealing read. The cruise ship on which they charter passage on turns out to be more than it first appeared to be, and a run-in with the Australian navy might spell disaster for all on board. At the same time, Yorick finds himself caught up in the arms of another gorgeous woman (the Ship’s Captain), who also proves to be more than he initially believed. We also get to catch up with what has happened with Yorick’s girlfriend Beth, who is going through a scary hallucination-filled meeting with some Aboriginals(?) in the Outback. Overall, not one of the most well loved tale-arcs, but still very enjoyable and progresses the tale appreciably. [5-stars]
This tale of the last man on Planet, surrounded by nearly exclusively gorgeous girls, continues to get better and better. It is simple to see why it has become so well loved. If you’ve waited this long to get the books, go for them in these deluxe editions, its worth it! Very highly recommended!

I’m patiently collecting and reading the Y: the last man series as the hardcover deluxe editions are being unrestricted. Man, I don’t get more antsy waiting for any additional hardcover relief aside from Locke & Key.
Anyway, the deluxe editions are awesome. Oversized and printed on sturdy thick paper. 5 stars.
This volume is packed with more action and more suspense than the previous two combined. I was on the edge of my seat until the very end. As Brian K. Vaughn continues his tale, many sub-plots start to catch up and more renovate. Some excellent things take place, but not as regularly as the terrible things. I won’t give any spoilers away, but the odds seem to be against Yorick & friends, and they aren’t likely to let up.
Aside from being a wonderful epic adventure that blends sci-fi with realism, Vaughn explores the differences, similarities and mysteries of the sexes and how humanity perceives them. I like this series; it’s sophisticated and ridiculously fun. I reflect all the hype is really legitimate. Can’t wait til October for Volume 4.

I am not so patiently waiting for the rest of this series to come out in the hardcover deluxe edition. I like this series and recommend it to everyone I know. I reflect, as I’ve stated in my reviews of the additional books in this series, that this plot line can appeal even to people who don’t read graphic novels. In fact, I’m thinking of getting the ladies in my book club to give it a shot. I reflect the writing is clever, and I like the art style.
The deluxe editions are much nicer than standard paperbacks, but I do wish the paper was of a privileged quality (that would bump my rating up to 5 stars). The paper used in these editions is thick, but matte (feels nearly like thick newspaper to the touch) as a replacement for of the slicker paper you get in some graphic novels. Granted, this is just a personal inclination, but I figure I should share it in case others have the same opinion. I am sure a super deluxe edition will come out in a few years and I’ll have to buy the whole series again. (Not that I mind).
