This book is incredible. I bought it to improve my fiction writing and I was pleasantly surprised that it was all I expected and more. The book covers the basics in enough detail to help writers of any level. It includes appealing and helpful exercises to get you motivated and moving. I was expecting to read tiny bits or chapters at a time, but the first time I opened it I couldn’t place it down. I had to force myself away a hundred pages later. This is certainly a fantastic buy, and I reflect will be helpful to fiction writers of all ages, levels and genres.

I have reasonably a few writing books. They don’t all fit on the top shelf next to my computer, so half of them live on the bookcase in another room. I can tell which books are the best by where they reside. Writing Fiction for Dummies is a “top shelf” book.
I don’t know about you, but I’ve seldom selected up many of the “Dummies” books. But I changed my mind when the fiction version came out, since it was coauthored by Randy Ingermanson (along with Peter Economy), whose blog and newsletter I’ve been reading for several years.
When I set out to write my first novel, I had no thought where to start. I wondered if I could possibly grow the initial seed of my tale into a full novel. I learned Randy’s website, where he outlined a novel-writing process he calls the Snowflake Method. Within a few days of following his directions, I felt confident that I knew where my tale was going.
Both the authors know that one particular method will not work for everyone. Writing Fiction for Dummies outlines four different ways of approaching a novel (including the Snowflake Method), and clarifies how to choose which one is for you.
Besides packing the book with all that you need for writing the novel, Ingermanson and Economy lay out the details of editing and polishing your manuscript, as well as key information on how to sell your book.
Full of practical examples from well-known novels, and Randy’s own brand of odd humor, this book is one I refer to regularly.

Remember all persons articles you’ve read on writing? Some were useful, some were not. If you’re like me, you’ve collected persons useful articles for years. Yet I permanently wished they could be collected in a single place.
“Writing Fiction for Dummies” does that! It is by far the best, most comprehensive book I’ve read on the theme of writing fiction (and I’ve read dozens). Highlights that I establish especially useful:
- How to make (or fix) characters so they resonate with readers.
- How to balance the structure of the novel so it never lags.
- How to write a novel that makes a powerful emotional response.
- How to revise and edit a novel for essential fundamentals.
- How to interpret feedback you may receive on a novel and apply it.
The structure of the book makes it possible for the authors to pack large amounts of information into a relatively fleeting space. First, the principles are open and clarified. Then, examples from literature are open so you can see the principles in action. Finally, exercises are outlined so you can apply the principles yourself.
If you are a serious fiction writer (published or not), this book should be on your shelf. Better yet, this book should be open by your computer or notepad as you write.

Every serious student of fiction should read this book. Randy’s background is in equipment so he is able to breakdown complex concepts into simple terms, bite-size chunks, and step-by-step instructions that are simple to know. For this reason alone, it’s unique among fiction writing books. It’s logical, it’s fresh, it flows, and it’s fantastic. Here’s an example:
In his book, Randy clarifies that making the plot for a work of fiction happens in 7 layers. The top-most layer is the single-sentence storyline of about 25 words that is the heart of your novel. The second layer is the three-act structure that every high school English teacher in the continental US teaches. But how do they tell? Therein lays Randy’s gift and his genius! He offers point, step-by-step instructions on converting the storyline into a three-act structure.
And that’s not all, by following Randy’s instruction you can factually enter the writing process at any layer of plot and then go up or down the layers to flesh them out. Randy clarifies the steps for taking one layer and turning it into the next from both directions which accommodates both major writing styles: plot-first (top-down) and seat-of-the-pants (bottom-up).
All in all, it’s an brilliant work that will not soon be topped. In this book, Randy has distilled decades of writing techniques into a comprehensive guide. There is factually no need for any supplemental material. If you provide the diligence to write a stellar novel, this book will provide the knowledge of how to do it well.
