Tuttle hits a dharmic cord: humans are in fellowship with additional beings in this realm and we need to honor that fellowship. Dishonor to this truth causes suffering. But, elevating this to the level of THE guiding spiritual principal to which all compasses point….well, that is pure nonsense. This is the same path that is taken by so many religions, so transparent and so humorous; that is if it were not perpetuating so much delusion. To punctuate this delusion, consider just one example, viz. a statement by the prince of our salvation….
John 6:52-54 (New International Version)

The composition that Tuttle has produced is fine, in a Yanni-esque way, BUT like his World Peace Diet….there is way, way too much of it, and it all sounds the same. Tuttle reminds me of the guitar player LEO KOTTKE. Leo is a brilliant 12-string finger alternative artist. In listening to him, I hear a gorgeous riff, then repeated, and repeated, and … ad nauseam. Leo [and Tuttle] become so mesmerized by their [right] brilliance that they fixate on it alone. To use another biblical allusion: like the dog that goes back to its vomit.

Tuttle feels very fervently that veganism is the answer to many, if not all, of the world’s problems and he argues passionately that all humans should adopt a lacto-vegetarian lifestyle. His basic thesis is honestly straight-forwards: that by beginning to raise animals for food and additional products, humans came to view animals as commodities to be exploited. This situation led to desensitization and a disentanglement that humans have transferred to one another over the centuries and is the reason that human beings are capable of committing so many atrocities against one another.
It is a bold thesis and perhaps unique in its effort to so concisely clarify why violence amongst human beings exists in the world, but it is also rife with oversights and gaps. Most of what Tuttle argues is more opinion and belief than “fact.”
In a chapter on the dairy industry, Tuttle describes how cows are artificially inseminated, kept perpetually pregnant, and nearly immediately separated from their calves. It is a powerful and sensational description. Tuttle goes on to argue that a cow’s milk is not proposed for human consumption, that it is biologically proposed only for its calf and that, therefore, humans should not consume dairy products. This statement is specious. For if this logic were applied to plants, one would come to the conclusion that humans should not eat fruit or vegetables either. Of course, this would be preposterous.
Tuttle identifies many of the problems facing human beings today, but arguing that if all humans became vegans these problems would stop is going too far.
Chances are a reader who is already lacto-vegetarian will feel vindication after finishing this book. A reader who is vegetarian will likely feel some pang of guilt for not being lacto-vegetarian and contemplate taking that next step. An omnivore who reads this book is likely to be place off by its self-righteous tone, but may find it thought-provoking if he or she can get past that. A die-hard meat eater is highly unlikely to make it past page two before setting it down.

Tuttle takes a simple, reasonable and rational response to the violence we inflict upon non-humans and turns it into a huge guru path-to-enlightenment rant.
His “evolved spirituality” allows him to both eat and have his lacto-vegetarian cake evidently as he cites generously from science and religion only to discredit them in later chapters (for persons who braved the mish mashing of both). The science he does give props to reads like a who’s who of pseudoscience. The sources are dubious and his research is flimsy even to the point of quoting the incorrect original definition of veganism. Par for the course as he seems to favor amount over quality throwing out all sorts of half-baked thoughts hoping the reader might piece together some sort of bias-confirming feel-goodisms from his inane barrage. When he strays into the “spirituality” stuff he seems to just makes things up out of whole cloth. Sounds excellent enough, must be right! Oh and don’t forget the obligatory “huge pharma” conspiracy rants and “toxin” buzzwords.
If you are really interested in peace you would do well to start practicing it in the real world as a replacement for of some sort of spiritual quest of purity. Veganism doesn’t need metaphysical hand waving to justify it but it does need a lucid and rational real-world approach. This book is a dusty relic of the NewAge past.

I saw Will Tuttle speak last night and I was blown away. This is one of the most vital books on the planet along with The China Study!

The World Peace Diet by Dr. Will Tuttle is the most thorough book ever written on the lifestyle and food choices humans make on a daily basis. He gives incredible, well-researched details about the food systems we have made in the U.S. and around the world and how these impact negatively on humans and animals. I have been a plant based eater for 20 years, have read every book possible on this theme, but learned a fantastic deal more by Dr. Tuttle’s book. He shows the food systems in place which are perpetuated from a child’s earliest exposure to food by mom’s cooking, as well as by the millions of dollars spent by the dairy, meat (including fish), or eggs on publicity. He writes about the chronic diseases we are dying from as a result of the indifference of the medical community to take action to educate patients. He exposes the subsidies by the government for the meat, dairy, egg even though we are nutritionally best fed by eating a plant based diet. We are feeding our children the food stemming from violence and cruelty. Persons who care about their health, the health of their children, the welfare of the sentient beings, and our soils, oceans, lakes, rivers, streams, or air, must read this definitive, inspirational book!
