Many are the mysteries surrounding the Emerald Dream and its ascetic guardians, the green dragonflight. In times past, druids have entered the Dream to monitor the ebb and flow of life on Azeroth in their never-ending quest to maintain the delicate balance of scenery.
But, not all dreams are pleasant ones. Recently the Emerald Nightmare, an area of corruption within the Emerald Dream, started growing in size, transforming the Dream into a realm of unimaginable horror. Since reading (and re-reading) the War of the Ancients trilogy by Richard Knaak, I’ve been looking forwards to this relief. To say it’s disappointing is an understatement. There’s factually no plot development, most major characters from previous Warcraft novels are missing, and there is very small action. Granted, the entire premise of the book is rather weak (Malfurion is stuck in the Nightmare), but if Richard couldn’t magic that into a readable book, perhaps he should have passed.
Unless a name else has been writing his previous books, I’m going to give Richard the benefit of the doubt. But don’t waste your money on this book.

If this were not a tie in for Warcraft I don’t reflect anyone would have published it. The only fun bits are the references to in game events, names, and places. All of the original content is terrible. The writing is terrible, characters are uninteresting, and the plot drags on for twice as long as it should.
If names were changed and references to warcraft were removed, I reflect most people would not give Stormrage a second glance. As it is the book is hiding behind plotpoints people have been waiting a long time for and will probably sell decently. Let me save you guys some money and spoil it for you. Xavius is the Nightmare Lord, but there’s something worse pulling his strings that the book doesn’t do more than hint at. Malfurion is back, Staghelm is now completely insane, and Teldrassil is both healed and blessed. There you go, all the vital bits of Stormrage in two sentences.

The leader spend a fantastic deal researching NPCs and locations of the World of Warcraft game. Something that’s very welcome.

I dunno what the first review’s problem is, the book has plenty of plot development, and as for characters from additional novels…they’re not in this book because they wouldn’t fit into the storyline at all. They’re not in the book because they don’t belong in it
one of the huge problems might be that the book picks up a lot of plot lines from quest chains in World of Warcraft that people might not have done or even known about, like the Scepter of the Shifting Sands quest chain, the first few Offspring quests out in Silithus where you learn Fandral’s history, the quest to turn in the Nightmare Engulfed Object, etc.
I agree that Knaak probably could have done better with it, but it’s not terrible. At least there’s not much of Rhonin in this one, lol

I’m usually not a richard knaak fan. But i like wow and so i read all i can so that i’m up to date on the lore and can tell my guildees that aren’t as in the know what’s going on in the world. This book was fantastic. Usually knaak is all action with small heart. But not this time. I was invested from page one and, despite all the adventure ride, establish it to be a like tale about two of my favorite characters in the lore – malfurion and tyrande.
If you’re not a knaak fan but like wow, give this one a shot.
