In persons years, he passed, regularly painfully, from innocence to experience.
Sledge enlisted out of jingoism, idealism, and young courage, but once he landed on the beach at Peleliu, it was purely a struggle for survival. Based on the notes he kept on slips of paper tucked secretly away in his New Tribute, he simply and directly recalls persons long months, mincing no words and sparing no pain. The reality of battle meant unbearable heat, deafening gunfire, unimaginable cruelty and cruelty, the stink of death, and, above all, constant dread. Sledge still has nightmares about “the bloody, muddy month of May on Okinawa.” But, as he also tellingly reveals, the bonds of friendship formed then will never be severed.

this is probably an outstamding book. the only problem is that the sample includes the books 3 forewards …. in fleeting you can only read a few paragraphs of the book rather than a few pages………grr

This is a pretty well written book with some very excellent descriptions of combat, but I was unable to overcome a feeling that Sledge managed to avoid the serious front line combat the riflemen were going through. He permanently seemed to be behind the line lobbing morter shells while the additional Marines were pinned down on the front lines. I don’t mean any disrespect because I’m sure there were cooks getting killed on these islands. Just an observation

This book was OK. There were several dull parts. It was certainly not the 5 star book that everyone raved about. Band of Brothers was much better by far. I was disappointed in my expectations of it being a hard to place down book.
