There are an infinite number of creatively acerbic ways in which one might say it, but the simple fact remains: this book is dreadful. This book reads disturbingly like one of persons comically misguided “hygiene manuals” from the early twentieth century, as the leader rails against the evils of [wancking] and battlefield cowardice. The overarching theme of the book seems to echo Leo Durocher’s infamous maxim that “nice guys end last.” Eldredge constantly implores men to throw off the cultural expectation of “niceness” that modern society has thrust upon them, and start fighting some unnamed foe in their necessary struggle to regain their inherent “wildness.” He even goes so far as to suggest that it was this inner pull towards wildness that caused him to take up residence in the “wild” west town of Colorado Springs. And I just thought it was the weather. This book rehashes all of the ancient stereotypes of men as daring knights and women as damsels in desire of rescue. The leader expresses his latent urge to be William Wallace (maybe it’s the kilt), and even waxes poetic about a Civil War soldier who envisions his own senseless death but cannot resist “the call of battle.” This is a childish and woefully misinformed tome that would seem to appeal only to persons with delusions of grandeur and/or small man’s syndrome. In fleeting, don’t waste your time.

Eldredge is one of persons hill billies who thinks he is macho and every man should(or wants to) be like him. In his book, there is no space for persons men who are not outdoor types, are from a different culture, etc. At one point he questions his kid to punch the tough at school as hard as he could, just to prove that he can do it. Jesus never physically hurt another human being, because it achieves nothing.
Eldredge’s is one of persons predictable guys who would beat his wife and kids and say he has god agreed power to do so, cause he is a guy.

It’s really sad that a topic with so much promise has been handled by such a poor writer. It seems as if this book was hastily assembled from a collection of random thoughts lacking any structure or purpose. By mentioning God and quoting bible verses the leader hides behind the shield that gives all excellent christians protection from criticism justly deserved in this case. What a load of crap. If you reflect this book is fantastic then buddy, you got problems.

It’s frightening how many thugs I know who have used this book as an excuse to return to their mindlessly violent approach to life, freed at last from normal Christian restraints at least to imitate civilized behavior. The function of religion throughout human history has been, in part, to mitigate this sort of barbarian thuggery. Now John Eldredge has turned the thuggery loose once again on the world. He should be ashamed!
