In his follow-up to Full Catastrophe Living–a book in which he open basic meditation techniques as a way of sinking stress and healing from illness–here Jon Kabat-Zinn goes much more deeply into the practice of meditation for its own sake. To Kabat-Zinn, meditation is vital because it brings about a state of “mindfulness,” a condition of “being” rather than “doing” during which you pay attention to the moment rather than the past, the future, or the multitudinous distractions of modern life. In brief, rather poetic chapters, he describes different meditative practices and what they can do for the practitioner. The thought that meditation is “spiritual” is regularly confusing to people, Kabat-Zinn writes; he prefers to reflect of it as what you might call a workout for your consciousness. This book makes learning meditation remarkably simple (although practicing it is not). But it also makes it seem infinitely appealing. –Ben Kallen

This is not a self-help book, it is a rationalization for living a bone idle, unconscious lifestyle. Jon Kabat raves about the power of “being” but never really clarifies what being is. His only definition for being is not doing. But to not do is simply an anti-concept devoid of meaning like God (not man), heaven (not Planet), etc. If you come upon a problem, Mr. Kabat-Zinn recommends you “place yourself” and watch your reactions, observe, and not really be there. In essense, you should hide away from your problems and pretend they do not exist! Note that Jon consistently defaces the word “thinking” to the point where one of his rationalizations is “just reflect of this (this being any thought process that would disagree with his philosophy) as ‘thinking’.” It should be recognizable that I cannot reflect of “thinking” negatively, lacking thinking in the first place! In fact, the only way one can meditate to the highest degree, leaving themself, feeling nothing, doing nothing, thinking nothing, is through death.

this is way too many CD’s and not excellent for a beginner. It was a waste of money. If you have too much time on your hands, this may work for you but being a mother, I don’t have even close enough time to incorporate into my life.

It’s a fantastic book and i am enjoying it. it had a excellent bit more markings in it than was described, but it’s not a huge deal.

I establish this book to be very dissapointing. I forced myself to read 3/4 of it. If you want to get useful info.. Place up a book on buddism or yoga meditation. I establish nothing special about this book. I read a lot of books on meditation, yoga, and buddism, and this book doesn’t hold up to any of them. I read the reviews on this site and ran out to buy this book. After forcing myself to read it I finally had enough. I definately don’t want this book to be in my libary.
