Product Description
Originally published in 1854, Walden, or Life in the Woods, is a plain account of the time that Henry D. Thoreau lived alone in a secluded cabin at Walden Pond. It is one of the most influential and compelling books in American literature.
This new paperback edition–introduced by noted American writer John Updike–celebrates the 150th anniversary of this classic work. Much of Walden’s material is derived from Thoreau’s journals and contains such engaging pieces as “Reading” and “The Pond in the Winter.” Additional legendary sections occupy Thoreau’s visits with a Canadian woodcutter and with an Irish family tree, a trip to Concord, and a description of his bean meadow. This is the perfect and authoritative text of Walden–as close to Thoreau’s original intention as all available evidence allows.
For the student and for the all-purpose reader, this is the ideal presentation of Thoreau’s fantastic document of social criticism and dissent.

This is the most horrible book I’ve ever read. If you reflect you can “learn yourself” or “learn the meaning of life” by going out into the woods by yourself well then you have a social problem. I don’t judge a pond can tell you anything about people or about anything for that matter. What can take place to you if you go live in solitary for a long period of time is that you can renovate a mental problem, and that’s about it. Sure, lets get rid of everything in life that makes us pleased, simplicity, simplicity, simplicity. Ha! This only sounds like a very depraved soul crying out for help. I reflect the only thing we can learn from this book is that it is not a excellent thought to go live in the woods by yourself, because it’s hard. I say this book is a perfect waste of time. It is perhaps the most dull piece of literature I’ve ever laid eyes. I say save your time and money and don’t read this book.
