Product Description
We know there’s something more. We sense it, we feel it, and we want it. But how do we find it—a spirituality that stands up to the questions of an honest, searching mind? ‘This book is for persons who need a fresh take on Jesus and what it means for us to live the kind of life he teaches us to live,’ writes Rob Bell. ‘This pursuit of Jesus is leading us backward as much as forwards … I am learning that what seems groundbreaking new is regularly just the discovery of something that has been there all along— it just got lost somewhere and it needs to be selected up, dusted off, and reclaimed.’ Now in softcover, Velvet Elvis offers original and refreshingly personal perspectives on what Christianity is really about. ‘We have to test everything,’ writes Bell. ‘Do that to this book. Don’t swallow it uncritically. Reflect about it. Wrestle with it. Just because I’m a Christian and I’m trying to articulate a Christian worldview doesn’t mean I’ve got it nailed. I’m contributing to the discussion. God has spoken, and the rest is commentary, right?’

The fact of the matter is simply this…the Bible is either 100% right or 100% fake. We don’t get to pick what we want to judge and what we want to change around to make our lifestyle seem OK. I judge the Bible is 100% right and directly inspired by God. Anyone…especially a pastor…should be very frightened when they start causing people to question their faith and the validity of God’s Word. I dread for the thousands of people that Rob Bell will undoubtedly be leading astray by this book. I can only pray that people open up their own Bibles and search for the Truth. Please don’t judge any human being over the Truth of Scripture! Check it out for yourself.

For Rob Bell (and his followers in the “emergent church” movement), it’s all about people putting themselves above Christ and Christianity. No thanks.

overrated. and the print makes you dizzy. and i’m sick and tired of hearing about his small boy (yes, we know your small boy is cute and teaches you about Jesus)… tell us something realistic, rob. we’re tired of the over spiritualized phsycho-babble.

I read it , reread it, and then read it again. There isn’t enough space or time to list all the issues Christians should have with Rob chimes repainting of Christianity. Many reviewers have done an brilliant job detailing many of these in previous reviews.
One only needs to google some Rob chimes contemporaries in his endnotes to realize he is far more reaching than most people realize. The most glaring example is endnote #143. “For a mind blowing introduction to emergence theory and divine creativity, set aside three months and read Ken Wilber’s ‘A Brief History of Everything’.” Ken Wilber is the foremost Buddhist philosopher of our time who refers to evangelical Christians in the forwards of one of his books as ‘fascist nazis’. Pastor Bell wants us to spend 3 months reading his 300 page book.
It doesn’t surprise then that in a November 2004 interview in Christianity Today that Bell states “We are rediscovering Christianity as an Eastern religion.” Read this book with his ‘Eastern religion’ comment in mind and it will be obvious his repainting lacks a firm foundation and, possibly, may no longer be Christian.
I do not recommend this book to anyone who isn’t firmly grounded in their Christian faith and challege all to pray the Holy Spirit convicts Rob Bell of his error and protects persons who are under his teaching during his present journey away from Christ.
