A biography of Meriwether Lewis that relies heavily on the journals of both Lewis and Clark, this book is also backed up by the leader’s personal travels along Lewis and Clark’s route to the Pacific. Ambrose is not content to simply chronicle the events of the “Corps of Discovery” as the explorers called their ventures. He regularly pauses to assess the military leadership of Lewis and Clark, how they negotiated with various native peoples and what they reported to Jefferson. Though the expedition failed to find Jefferson’s hoped for water route to the Pacific, it fired interest among fur traders and additional Americans, changing the face of the West forever.

I judge this book was listed as Like New, Maybe Read Once.
Yes, it did look New, but it was absolutely saturated in cigarette smoke as if a name had smoked the whole time it had been read- not just the outside as if packed by a smoker. There was NO WAY I could hold it in front of me to read for hours- the stink was sickening as well as a health risk for me as an athsma uncomplaining. So, I place it out in the garage to see if it could be aired out, but after all this time, the smell has not dissipated much. I tried to contact the seller immediately upon arrival, but never figured out how to send a message until I received this review. I didn’t pay very much, but I feel like I wasted my money, especially so since I have far less disposable income that I did in better economic times. So- for me, trading on Amazon wasn’t a very excellent experience and am apprehensive to buy there again.

Parents, If you’re looking for a excellent history book for your children to read, please beware.
While Ambrose credibly presents the exploits of the Corps of Discovery, he also fails to resist the modern urge to talk about their sex lives. Descriptions of the men’s sexual practices with the Mandan indian women and their varied venereal diseases are offered for our enlightenment. The leader also regales us with the curious sexual rituals of the Mandans, themselves. In addition, for no particularly beneficial reason, Ambrose relates to us how cold the winter was by offering us the natural consequences to one who would chooose to relieve himself out-of-doors.

I had permanently been interested in Lewis and Clark but this book was just too much. This book had no real catch. I assume that it was pretty much accurate but there was nothing in it that made me want to turn the page. I had to physicaly force myself to get through it. In additional words don’t read this book unless you either are Lewis and Clark. ( I reflect that even they would fall asleep during this book) or your life depends on getting through it.
