I heard the leader speak on NPR awhile ago, and thought this would be a fascinating book. But, I just couldn’t get past the first couple of chapters. I reflect the lady has an appealing tale to tell, but I just couldn’t connect with what she had to say.

This person is exceptional, but don’t let that stop you from emulating her! She has courage, integrity, and intelligence to spare–and she used it to save her country’s ecological health as well as struggling for democracy and the rights of women for equality and dignity. She went through very perilous circumstances, but fortunately for us all, she still continues to this day as a voice for democracy and honesty in government. We need more like her!

Wangari Maathai has done a lot for our country and many of us are proud of her even though we have no voice. It was fantastic to finally read the tale we never get told in the media or additional public forums. I vividly remember seeing and hearing first hand how events unfolded when Wangari’s resilience saved our beloved city park from concrete buildings (Uhuru Park).
“Unbowed” also provided very useful insights to some of the tales and people that have shaped our political history.
A moving and inspiring tale. Well written and simple to read.

I read a copy and then bought several to give to friends. Wangari is an incredible woman who starts by giving a excellent background on the effects of colonialization of Africa socially, politically and environmentally. As a founder of the Green Belt Movement she has been through incredible things, sometimes horrific in scenery, yet she has the ability to step back and analyze the events so well. No marvel she won a Noble Prize. This book should be required reading.
