Perhaps the most vital work of philosophy written in the twentieth century, the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus first appeared in 1921 and was the only philosophical work that Ludwig Wittgenstein published during his lifetime. Written in fleeting, carefully numbered paragraphs of extreme compression and brilliance, it immediately convinced many of its readers and captivated the imagination of a generation of philosophers. Influencing the Logical positivists of the 1920s and 1930s, the book later went to grip the minds of many additional philosophers, convincing many that propositions were pictures of reality.
In this edition, David Pears and Brian McGuinness have completely revised their translation based upon Wittgenstein’s own suggestions and comments in his correspondence with C. K. Ogden, Wittgenstein’s first translator. In addition, this edition contain the introduction by Bertrand Russell which appeared in the original English.

I ordered this book as a gift for a friend. I bought a used one to save money – we are in an economic dip. When I received the book, I was shocked just how ancient it is. The pages are positively yellowed by age. Moreover, the previous reader has scribbled in reasonably many pages.

Wittgenstein’s philosophy prides itself on its sober empiricism, unbiased objectivity, and logical respect for truth. It vehemently rejects all forms of mysticism and pneumatic spirituality. It is essentially the defining work of logical atomism, which states that we are all just collections of independently operating atoms or atomic facts, all of which exist apart from any necessity or mutual interrelatedness. This philosophy has, needless to say, been proven untrue many times over. As an intellectual movement, it was inevitable, and can be described as an essential step in the chronological progression of philosophy, but its day has come and gone. Certain proof of the factual inaccuracy of this philosophy can be establish in Brand Blanshard’s fantastic book _Reason and Analysis_, which systematically dismantles Wittgenstein’s concepts.
That said, this is a very thought provoking book, and may be useful as an intellectual exercise of sorts. It may help you to more carefully scrutinize truths you had previously taken for granted, and view life with an overall more sharply critical eye. I have nothing but the utmost respect for anyone who is truly able to comprehend what Wittgenstein is adage. But I must recommend the philosophy of BRAND BLANSHARD to anyone who is a serious advocate of Wittgenstein, simply because you must know what your critics are adage if you expect to mount a successful defense of your philosophy. People who are in the know agree that Blanshard’s attack on the philosophy of Wittgenstein was most devastating. If the adherents of Wittgenstein’s philosophy hope to be able to place Humpty-Dumpty back together again, I fervently suggest you open your mind to what people on the additional side are adage, so that you can find a way to adapt to these new trends in western philosophical thought.

Word games? Logic games? Logic problems? Word problems? I didn’t have much fun reading this. It was far more hard than the MENSA word puzzle book. I liked Ludwig’s additional books about baseball much more. He seemed to be able to capture a complex game simply. Here the games are merely complex. Speechifying will never be the same. Was that clear, or should I not have bothered?

Wittgenstein must be the most over rated philosopher who has ever lived. Because of the work (and marketing) of a few devoted students, the rest of us have been led to judge that he is one of the fantastic ones. The truth is nothing of the sort. He couldn’t write clearly. The result is much undeserved attention has been agreed to some very ambiguous epigrammatic statements of his. Much of his work is unreadable and of no use or interest to anyone but a few hard core positivist philosophy professors. If you really want to read some excellent philosophy, do not be unjustifiably taken in by the weird mystique of the Wittgenstein name. It is all P.R. work by some ivy league philosophers who do not even care anymore if philsophy has anything useful to say to people who live in the real world. As long as they can continue to collect their salaries and analyze their small language puzzles in the privacy of their faculty offices, they are pleased-and beside the point to the lives of anyone who really works outside of a university. Save yourself the bother of trying to decipher this guy; It isn’t worth your distress.

Though I reflect “philosophical investigations” is a better book by Wittgenstein, his “tractatus” is a must read for all philosophy students. It’s also a fantastic introduction to the philosophy of logic for all readers.
