As a new plague related to the rabies virus infects millions, America recalls its military forces from around the world to safeguard hospitals and additional vital buildings. Many of the victims become rabid and violent but are easily controlled-that is, until so many are infected that they start to run amok, spreading slaughter and disease. Lieutenant Todd Bowman got his unit through the horrors of combat in Iraq. Now he must lead his men across New York through a storm of violence to secure a research facility that may hold a cure. To make it in this mission to help save what’s left of society, the men of Second Platoon will face a terrifying battle of survival against the very people they have sworn to protect-people turned into a fearless, endless horde armed only with tooth and nail.

I could tell in the first 10 pages of this that the leader is prioe military. As a soldier myself I establish his constatm use of military terms and subsequant explantions for civilian readers to be distracting. Additional than that the book i very well written especially compared to alot of additional zombie horror novels available on amazon.

From Beginning to end this is one fantastic tale! Regular Army Troops are being pulled from overseas combat and being sent to the U.S. to help and contain a weird illness that makes its victim’s become very aggresive and later much, much worse. The tale is told through the eyes of grunts, from their LT, to PFC. There are militay terms etc used but even if you don’t know them, you start to fell real pride in our young men and how they work as teams against a horrible enemy. The medical staff and the How and Why are really explored and only add’s to the final Custer’s last stand battle.

I *nearly* gave up on this book a few chapters in. The present-tense writing style was distracting, the characters were hard to distinguish from one another, and some of the dialog was pretty terrible. I’m glad I stuck with it though, as once the action got going, the present-tense approach added reasonably a bit of urgency and the dialog became less of an issue for me. While none of the characters ever really stood out, the ending was still very poignant. The leader clearly has a lot of respect for the troops and managed to tell a surprisingly distressing tale about a truly heroic group of people stuck in a no-win situation.

By far, this is the best book I’ve read all year. So stark, raw and engaging. This has made the additional novels I’m reading [I like to read multiple books at a time] seem elementary and uninspired. I never thought I’d delight in a military fiction book, but this may have converted me. This book will not disappoint.

With the world looking like it’s going to Hell in a Handbasket, I’ve been drawn to lots of Zombie Lit lately and this is the best new work I’ve read all year. It is written primarily from the perspective of a tiny military unit, which adds a unique flavor to the tale. The characters are well-developed, the tale line is plausible and I was engaged enough to read the whole thing in just a couple of days. While regularly times tales like this are written from the perspective of Everyman/Everywoman coping with the apocalypse and hoping for the military to show up, this leader obviously took the time to educate himself on how the military would be used in a situation such as this and analyze the unique problems that they would experience. I really loved this work and hope to see more, although I’m not sure enough main characters are left from this tale for a sequel, sadly enough.
