Toni Morrison’s highly acclaimed novel Sula is as gripping on audiotape as it is on paper. The Nobel Prize-winning writer narrates the unabridged version of the book in a rich, soothing voice that mesmerizes listeners with its relaxed and methodical cadence. Sula revolves around the relationship between two small girls growing up in a poor, black neighborhood nestled high in the hilltops. “The Bottom,” as the barrio came to be known, is brimming with eccentric residents but sadly deprived of human warmth. (The town really takes pride in celebrating National Suicide Day.) But, out of this bitter, abrasive environment grows a gorgeous friendship between Sula and Nel. Their shared secrets and dreams blossom through childhood, but their special bond suffers after the two separate. Sula leaves the Bottom to conquer the unknown cities of America, while Nel becomes a homebody, settling down as a wife and mother. When Sula returns to her hometown, she feels like a weirder; she repels everyone, even the only right friend she ever knew. Morrison’s vocal range evokes an extraordinary atmosphere of survival in a harsh and unforgiving world. (Four cassettes; running time: aprox. four hours)

Sula, by Toni Morrison is by far the worst book I have ever read in my whole life. It is dull and extremely tedious. It is also the most incoherent and lewd book I have read in a long time. Save yourself some pain and agony and choose another book. Do not make the same mistake I did, AVOID THIS BOOK AT ALL COSTS!

I have read a lot of books, but this has to be one of the worst that I have ever read! I establish it to be terribly slow and very hard to get interested in, not to mention that there are several parts that are downright offensive. Don’t waste your time, there is much better reading out there!

Toni Morrison proves herself to be the D.H. Lawrence of the black voice–that is, minus the elegance. The most appealing attribute of this work is its dialogues. The characters talk very amusing and, like, real.

It is incredible that a novel so poorly written could be published. This book is not worthy of anyone’s time or attention.
