Jaine Austen is a freelance writer. No, she doesn’t write articles for COSMO about dating, she pretty much sticks to one theme. Writing steamy personal ads. Of course, business has been a small slow, until Howard Murdoch calls on her for help. The geeky guy is looking for a name to write a like letter to an exercises instructor, so Jane agrees. Success. Sorry to say, the excitement from the success is fleeting-lived, for Howard finds the instructor dead on the night of his huge date, which just happens to be Valentine’s Day. She’s been murdered with a thigh master, and Howard is the prime suspect. Now Jaine has to try to find out who the real murderer is, before she goes crazy from a terrible-conscience.
Levine has made an extremely likable character in Jaine. Her antics and personality are crazy, yet extremely entertaining. THIS PEN FOR HIRE is a quick-read that all mystery lovers will delight in. A must-have.

Im going to start by adage that if your looking for a book that is loaded with intense suspense ie a “serious” type of mystery you will want to pass up this book. But, if you are looking for a… cute girly book that has a small mystery and will keep you laughing, then you establish what your looking for.
This is not the type of book I would have normally selected up: Im not into mysteries. But, one day, about a year and a half ago, I was stuck at one of my acquaintances apartment with nothing to do and went looking for some reading material. I selected the book out of a box of books that had been shoved in the closet based only on the cutesy pink take in that appealed to me that day and the catchy title. I was hooked from the first few pages. Im not much for sleuth type mysteries but what kept me reading was that the storyline didnt seem to take it self too seriously, nearly like the “Legally Blonde” of mystery books (I’ve never seen “Legally Blonde” but it sounds right). Of course Jaine’s constant quips and like interest helped the tale along. And the mystery bits were just enough to keep you guessing and wanting to find out what was going on lacking bogging you down with the seriousness of additional mystery books.

O.K., so this one wasn’t free, but “Death of a Trophy Wife” was, and after I read that I knew I had to read the wole series. I can see the differences in this maiden effort, but I loved it nonetheless. The plotting could have been tighter, and the villain was too simple to spot, but if I had read this book first I probably wouldn’t have noticed. Ms. Levine has really gro wn as a writer between this book and the latest, and I can’t wait to read all the others. Snarky, amusing M.C., fantastic cat, and a really different point of view. And anyone who has ever been owned by a cat knows that feeding that cat IS a large part of your life!

Use the “search inside the book” feature to read the first page and you’ll see why humor lovers adore this series. Levine is witty while still having affection for her characters. I get a excellent laugh an average of every two paragraphs. The noise-fixated national in this book is particularly amusing (and recognizable to anyone who has lived in an apartment). Crisp, polished writing, odd but realistic characters, and forceful plotting make this series a pleasure to read.

This is a amusing mystery from beginning to end. It usually takes me a week to read a book. I read this book within a day. It is quick paced from beginning to end. I will be reading more books by Laura Levine.
