The tale is pretty grim: Teenaged Wolff moves with his divorced mother from Florida to Utah to Washington State to escape her violent boyfriend. When she remarries, Wolff finds himself in a bitter battle of wills with his abusive stepfather, a contest in which the two prove to be more evenly matched than might have been supposed. Deception, disguise, and illusion are the weapons the young man learns to use as he grows up–not terrible training for a writer-to-be. Dismal though this tale of family tree strife is, it is also darkly amusing and so artistically satisfying that most readers come away exhilarated rather than depressed.

I didn’t like this book for many reasons. One, it was a assigned reading book and most of the books schools assign are dull and dumb, this year being no exception. Really, they assigned us two excellent books, After Long Silence & Ender’s Game. Additional than persons, the rest sucked. A Boy’s Life wasnt that excellent either. Why, being in 2001, would ninth graders want to read about a boy in a dysfunctional family tree back in 1950’s? That is a question that I want answered. Boys might find this book appealing but I, as a female, do not.

This Boy’s Life is about a single mother trying to raise a son correctly, but runs into many problems. For example, Toby is the main character in the book, he runs in to problems such as drugs, drinking, and smoking (243). Toby in my opinion is an unreal character because he has to deal with things that most kids never will in real life. … Toby also has an abusive step father named Dwight (202). Dwight is a character that is thick headed and stupid. He spends all of his time beating Toby and then when Toby is going to place he tries to be nice … so that he will stay. In conclusion, Toby is an abused teenager that has a hard life to live and he makes even harder by doing drugs.
This Boy’s Life is a horrible book. For example, the book starts out with Toby and his mom in there car witnessing a semi truck going over a cliff. This has nothing to do with the rest of the book and it doesn’t belong. The rest of the book follows this example with having things that contradict themselves and things that don’t belong or don’t matter. In addition, the book focuses too much on Dwight beating Toby and Toby trying to escape. Toby needs to be more like an actual kid and live the life of one. This book needed a better ending and climax to make it more exciting. If this book all ears more on the life of a real teenager I reflect more people might be interested in it.
So for my final statement I reflect this book needs to be all ears more on realistic events and the characters need to be more realistic and relatable too. The people that might like this book are the people that like terrible books and poor reading material. …

We chose this book for my book group, so I persisted in reading it. Otherwise I would have dropped it after the first 50 pages (I permanently give a book at least 50 pages). I establish the writing flat, the characters vile, and the plot irritating. There are so many excellent books in the world; why read this one?

I reflect This Boy’s Life writtern by Tobias Wolff was extremly dissapointing and uneventful. I establish it dull and struggled to read each page. The book is a recount of Tobias Wolff’s life as a child. Growing up in a tiny town in Utah, he encounters many of life’s new experiences. Building friends with one of the losers of the school he eventually ends up fighting him in the smoker, the school boxing club. The issues of depression and misery were unappealing and reading it every night was like a chore rather than a plesure.
This book is not suitable for School children as they would not find the book appealing and will probally fail and post tests on the novel.

Not being much of a reader, I establish the book simple to read but confusing in parts as to where he was or how he got there. The tale itself is a predictable alcoholic’s tale about how dysfunctional life with an alcoholic can be. The most exciting part of the book came when Toby’s Mom marries an alcoholic named Dwight. Dwight turned out to be very abusive towards Toby and his Mom. When Toby broke his finger, Dwight smashed that finger and thought nothing of it. After a night of drinking, Dwight would come home and take out his problems on Rosemary (sometimes by arresting her). Toby and his Mom eventually considered Toby going to live in Paris with his Uncle to get away from Dwight. Except for his mention of how his English teacher thought he showed some potential for writing, I don’t know how Mr. Wolff turned his life around and became a professor and a writer.
Being a single Mom I thought I would tell to more of the tale. In the tale, Toby gets along with his Mom to the point of understanding how she feels but with my son he does not have any consideration for me at all.
If you like to read tales about dysfunctional divorced family tree life then you will like reading this book. I do not reflect that the book was worth the fee I paid for it. I would rather Mr. Wolff finished up with how he turned his life around and got his education as a replacement for of ending up singing drunk songs with his friend block.
