Virginia Woolf (née Stephen) (1882-1941) was an English novelist and essayist regarded as one of the foremost modernist literary facts of the twentieth century. During the interwar period, Woolf was a significant figure in London literary society and a member of the Bloomsbury Group. Her most legendary works include the novels Mrs Dalloway (1925), To the Lighthouse (1927), and Orlando (1928), and the book-part essay A Room of One’s Own (1929) with its legendary dictum, “a woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction. ” Woolf started writing well in 1905, initially for the Times Literary Supplement with a journalistic piece about Haworth, home of the Brontë family tree. Her first novel, The Voyage Out, was published in 1915. She went on to publish novels and essays as a public intellectual to both critical and well loved success. Woolf is considered one of the greatest innovators in the English language. In her works she experimented with stream-of-consciousness, the underlying psychological as well as emotional motives of characters, and the various possibilities of broke narrative and chronology.

Rachel Vinrace is a character whose life in England is structured by Victorian thoughts of the proper development of young women. Her outer life is restricted by her maiden aunts, and her inner life is kept in check by self-discipline in her piano playing and the restraint imposed on her imagination in the kind of literature she is allowed to read.
Rachel has an opportunity to take a voyage out of her bonds on a cruise to South America. She starts to loosen her self restrictions as she studies the artificial and real motives of her fellow travelers. While on her father’s ship, Rachel’s liberation is as slow and determined as her piano playing, staying with the composition but engaging in a few private improvisations.
While staying at a hotel in South America, the pace of Rachel’s development accelerates. As she accompanies additional courageous souls on a fleeting guided trip into the wilds of the jungle, Rachel’s insight races. But she has no meaningful starting point or signposts to guide her in self exploration. Her emotions become increasingly intense and her behavior more erratic as she falls in like with a fellow passenger. Rachel’s thoughts take flight with arresting visual images and loose emotional associations. A common resolution of her out of control improvisations is the perfect peace of interest in an undersea world, a final reduction of “fever.”

I bought this book because I must own all by Woolf, as a matter of need rather than want–or so I feel. Although I’m able to admit the shortcomings (far less than my own) that inevitably accompany experimental, modernist work, my opinion of her genius is curiously immune to these objective observations. She is like my literary mother, so I was chastised never to have known this novel existed until I started reading it.
As far as form and structure go, I feel Woolf tries too hard to be conventional: she can’t ever reasonably fit into it properly, and you realize why it took her so long to perfect the book. As permanently, but, she is a master of the character, something I didn’t realize until the end, where every character is felt so fervently that I nearly cried. I know.
But awkward the overall construction may be, and but much it may drag, you feel the beginnings of her future craft. The climax is it, where she finally catches the pace and throws you mercilessly against the ridiculously shallow aspect of everyday life. And the arbitrary but crushing beauty of like. I dreamt about it for days afterward.

A powerful tale of self-actualization. Rachel is a young woman who ventures on a long journey to South America where the fact that she is long away from home, and away from past influences, she is now able to make choices for herself, and adapt to change.
This is one of the best books I have ever read, and one of the worst reviews I have ever written. Don’t use it to NOT buy the book, just read it say to yourself, so lame reviewer said it was fantastic. If I could write well, I’d write a book, as I don’t write well, I delight in wonderful and brilliant books like The Voyage Out! Delight in!
