Tufte is the power on graphs and the visual spectacle of information. I read rave after rave about this guy on different websites. He taught at Yale and all that. Well, his books is the pits and is virtually worthless. Dont waste your time on this garbage. If you have any common sense, its more valuable than anything you’ll read in this book. The only point I learned from this book is that Ivy league degrees don’t guarantee quality.

Excellent graphics but not cutting edge

This book is perfectly produced but it lacks any “how-to” information for designers. The leader really misses his own presumed mission for the book. For example, he rips apart a graph used in a well loved magazine as not effectice, etc yet his own book is a mess and a how-to for not crafty and conveying informtion. Case in point: All of his diagrams or illustrations are never labeled. So you just have illos all over and no reference to the text. YOU have to figure it out yourself. Pretentious artsy rubbish. If you want to waste your money on something “appealing,” then blow your wad on this book. But if you want clear, concise, significant design info or even about the history of design, forget this book. I have it and I don’t read it. Like I said, it’s pretentious artsy nonsense at its worst. The only thing appealing about the book is its sparse and obscure layout and appealing past examples of information design which are brilliant but I can’t help but feel that there are tons of examples like that out there and most likely an hopefully in better books.

The book is excellent, the contents is gorgeous. This is a quality book, and obviously you have to pay the fee for that. Many people should read this book, especially if involved in web stuff, it would make the web better.
