Which naturalist was it said, “I like the mountains, that’s why I never go there…” ? Well Doughty and Friedman may have establish a fun way to fund their fun, but publishing a book inviting more people to rent cars in a place where cars ought to be restricted, and visit places that can’t support a fantastic deal of visitation is irresponsible. They like Kaui? Then they ought to stay away from it and not encourage hundreds of thousands of others to go to places with an ecology that can’t support their tourism.

“Ultimately” a poor use of money. Advice on activities (especially helicopter tours aka Air Kauai) was dead incorrect. Book did not warn us of dangers at its “real gems” and was way off on the friendliness of the people (I lost track of how many haole comments I heard behind my back). Maybe this is more of a commentary on my displeasure with Kauai but this book had really convinced me that it was a fantastic place. My advice: stick with Maui.

I have to agree with the reader from California (December 3): “Ultimately” a waste of money (and time, I might add). On our recent trip to Kauai, we were sorely disappointed with the advice and biases in this book. A poor choice indeed, for which we have no one to blame but ourselves. But here’s some advice for fellow travelers: certainly avoid this book (and some of the additional disorganized ones as well), and get the free brochures that are so readily available all over the island. Also, buy the University of Hawaii maps: an brilliant value if you are exploring the island on your own (not on an organized tour). By the way, Kauai is a gorgeous island, the experience of which you should not dilute with the “Ultimatelies” of the world.

Because this book was one of persons featured by Amazon we bought it along with the Revealed for Maui. Both were bitter disappointments mostly because the text is mostly opinion and orientating to where you are when you’re reading it is very confusing. The authors are very amusing with opinions about this and that but all that falls fleeting when you’re wanting to find out where to go. We wasted alot of time.
I gave it two stars because my children loved the photos.

Well this book must be selling, because I live across the street from one of the secluded waterfall trails, and every obnoxious tourist on the island hops out of the car with it, walks up to my front door or just yells from the street, and then questions, “Is this the way to the waterfalls, can we use your telephone (hose, get a drink of water, etc)?” After a million questions and loud noises and tossed garbage from persons who stop there, they choose to turn around in my driveway or drive on my plants. I reflect the writer of this book should mention a small something about respecting the residents of these places he’s so proud to spread the word about.
