Product Description
Happiness is something everyone desires. Yet how to find happiness–or even if we deserve to–remains a mystery. Still more mysterious is the secret to a lasting happiness that cannot be taken away. In The Essential Happiness Prescription, bestselling leader Deepak Chopra shows us seven keys to uncover the right secrets of joy in the most hard times.
The goal of life is the expansion of happiness, he contends. But in today’s demanding world, that goal seems elusive, if not intolerably out of reach. Society reinforces the belief that fulfillment comes from achieving success, wealth, and excellent relationships. Yet Chopra tells us that the opposite is right: all success in life is the by-product of happiness, not the cause.
So what is the cause? The Essential Happiness Prescription shares spiritual principles for a life based on a sense of your “right self” lying beyond the ebb and flow of daily living. Simple daily exercises lead to eliminating the root causes of unhappiness and letting a deeper level of bliss unfold.
After all avenues to happiness have been explored and exhausted, only one path is left: the journey to enlightenment. In The Essential Happiness Prescription, the daunting and exotic challenge of finding enlightenment becomes accessible step by step. We are taken on an inspiring journey to the right self, the only place unconcerned by distress and misfortune.
On the way we learn the secrets for living mindfully and with effortless spontaneity. Now happiness is no longer hostage to external events but an experience we carry with us permanently. As Chopra inspiringly concludes, “Everything we dread in the world and want to change can be transformed through happiness, the simplest desire we have, and also the most profound.”

Introductory chapter sets up a daring plot for the book: the relatively new meadow of positive psychology, best known for Lyubomirsky, Diener and Seligman, is open; but, we are told, this is only the start in the right direction. And he, the leader, knows better.
If this was suspiciously (over) ambitious, things were not any better later:
1. There are no references, neither for individual statements nor as all-purpose sources (is it possible, that this is only omission for Kindle?).
2. It expects that reader finds concept of Divine self-evident
3. Precision of language is missing, take for example one of the crucial (as he says) assertions: “In the world of constant change, there is something that doesn’t change”. He doesn’t clarify what that would be, and he doesn’t prove this.
4. Book has 21 prescriptions, 3 for every of 7 keys. They are very probably useful, but some lack clarity and some have hidden assumptions. Here is quote from first prescription:
“My body is my tie to the universe’s infinite supply of energy. If I’m feeling lack of energy in any way, it means that I am resisting flow of this infinite supply. I will question my body what it needs and will follow its advice.”
5. Probably fake aver towards the end: “The mathematics of radioactive decay reveals that each of us has at least a million atoms in our bodies that were once in the body of Christ, Buddha, ..” First, radioactive decay has nothing to do with recycling of atoms, and second, where’s reference or calculations?!
Better to spend money and time with Buddha’s Brain or The How of Happiness.

I was a small disappointed in this book, because I establish it too deep (if you will). It did not keep my interest and I finished up never finishing it. I had seen the leader on the Bonnie Hunt Show and liked what he said, but did not get the same feeling while reading the book.

Had to have my own copy of this simple guide to remembering who we really are after reading it in the public library. I don’t usually buy books in hard copy because of storage issues. This gem of a book is a must-own if one is serious about sustained happiness, joy and peace.
