Product Description
Milo Weaver used to be a “tourist” for the CIA—an undercover agent with no home, no identity—but he’s since retired from the meadow to become a middle-level manager at the CIA’s New York headquarters. He’s bought a wife, a daughter, and a brownstone in Brooklyn, and he’s tried to place his ancient life of secrets and lies behind. But, when the arrest of a long-sought-after assassin sets off an investigation into one of Milo’s oldest colleagues and exposes new layers of intrigue in his ancient cases, he has no choice but to go back undercover and find out who’s holding the strings once and for all.
In The Tourist, Olen Steinhauer—twice nominated for an Edgar Award—tackles an intricate tale of treachery and manipulation, loyalty and risk in an utterly compelling novel that is both painstakingly modern and yet also reminiscent of the espionage genre’s luminaries: Len Deighton, Graham Greene, and John LeCarré.

i simply will not buy a novel that costs nearly 50% more than additional books of the same genre. I don’t begrudge a honest fee, but this is just greed. Let them peddle their books elsewhere.

On page 29 of the hardcover version the leader refers to a fictional article in the International Indication Tribune to the effect that (in 2001) Donald Rumsfeld stated that $2.3 TRILLION dollars (!!!) in U.S. military spending could not be accounted for, which comprised about a quarter of the pentagon budget.
Well.
The fact is that in 2001 the entire U.S. military budget was 396 Billion dollars. The leader would have us judge that the U.S. military budget was in the area of $9.2 TRILLION, an error margin in excess of 2300 percent. Either this guy is a perfect fool or there was no proofreading. If it was only a misprint it would have read $2.3 billion dollars, which is about one half of one percent. But no, the leader clearly states that it was about a quarter of the entire budget. So I can only conclude that yes, the leader and the editors are fools or incompetent.
In any case I have stopped reading this thing and won’t be buying any more Olen Steinhauer books. I am not surprised that additional fool Clooney bought the movie rights. He probably believes Steinhauer’s numbers.

I cannot judge this book really got printed! The leader is one of the worst writers that I have read!
Contrived, loosely held together, so scattered between this/that. That is what this book is. The plot is unoriginal-though the settings seem to be that classic “Euro-Bond” landscape. The only inventiveness in this book was the boredom that it causes the reader. Honestly, reading this book was like that Seinfeld episode where J.Peterman drags Elaine to see the “English Uncomplaining” – and Elaine screams out “Just die already!”
DO NOT BE FOOLED – This leader is one of the worst spy novelists I have had the displeasure of reading!
His depiction of “Trade Craft” for spies is laughable. I’ll give him credit for “dead drops”, but additional than that…I’m going to go with a NO NO NO NO! What the @#%($ were the publishers thinking by giving this guy a book deal!
Plot:”Drunk/Drugged Up&OUT CIA ‘Tourist’” (all with a much too confusing game of “what is my name…no really what is going to be my name…no seriously what was my name…game going on through out the intro) looking to make a killing; centered around 9/11 – and then slow but painful death of a plot kills what is left of a potentially brain dead novel!
Barbara Cartland (God rest her soul) could have written a better spy novel! And to reflect a name really bought the rights to make this a movie?!? Seriously, to the people who bought the rights…get your money back! For persons of you out there considering buying this garbage – hope you’re using it for kindling or toilet paper, because damn, this is one of the worst books I have ever read!

The leader obviously has a very low opinion of the CIA. I cannot imagine any spy agency would hire such a mentally ill, incompetent agent. I gave up on this book in the middle. Do not waste your time or money.

My Kindle 2 version was really terrible. Page after page of huge gaps between words. Made it hard to get into. Amazon should redo this version and give everyone who bought it a new version with much better editing. Bring shame on on Amazon for such shoddy work on this one. RKO
