Twenty-five years ago, New York Times bestselling leader Terry Brooks wrote a novel that brought to life a dazzling world that would become one of the most well loved fantasy epics of all time, beloved by millions of fans around the world. Ten more Shannara books would follow. Now, for the first time in one elegant collector’s edition hardcover, and featuring an introduction by the leader, here are the first three novels of that classic series: The Sword of Shannara, The Elfstones of Shannara, and The Wishsong of Shannara—the beginning of a phenomenal epic of excellent and evil.
The Sword of Shannara
Long ago, the wars of the very ancient Evil ruined the world. In peaceful Shady Vale, half-fragile Shea Ohmsford knows small of such troubles. But the supposedly dead Warlock Lord is plotting to ruin everything in his wake. The sole weapon against this Power of Darkness is the Sword of Shannara, which can be used only by a right heir of Shannara. On Shea, last of the bloodline, rests the hope of all the races.
The Elfstones of Shannara
The magical Ellcrys tree is dying, loosening the spell that bars the Demons from enacting vengeance upon the land. Now Wil Ohmsford must guard the Elven girl Amberle on a perilous quest as she carries one of the Ellcrys’ seeds to a mysterious place where it can be quickened into a powerful new force. But dark on their trail comes the Reaper, most fearsome of all Demons, aiming to crush their mission at any cost.
The Wishsong of Shannara
An very ancient Evil is stirring to new life, sending its ghastly Mord Wraiths to ruin Mankind. To win through the vile growth that protects this dark force, the Druid Allanon needs Brin Ohmsford—for she alone holds the magic power of the wishsong. Reluctantly Brin joins the Druid on his treacherous journey. But a prophecy foretells doom, as Evil nurses its plans to trap the unsuspecting Brin into a fate far more horrible than death.
Thus starts Terry Brooks’s thrilling Shannara epic, an unforgettable tale of adventure, magic, and myth.

Here is the all-purpose thought of the entire book: Boy sees scary stuff, boy goes somewhere, boy meets friend, boy travels somewhere else, boy gets seperated from friend, boy goes somewhere else, boy is reunited with friend, boy learns about somewhere else boy needs to go…………ALL FROM ONE PESPECTIVE: The boy’s.
I can sum up the ENTIRE book in one axiom: “Boy goes from place to place”.
I see people rant and rave about how fantastic this book is, but I marvel if they’ve ever read anything that was truly excellent?

I bought it, and I have never NOT finished a book that I ongoing… so I’ll end it. But I don’t recommend anyone else starting it.
How Terry Brooks became legendary and successful is seriously beyond me. The writing is so wordy and mazelike that I can barely wade through it… and this is coming from a guy who does not consider Tolkein wordy and likes The Silmarillion.
Language of Tolkein, I have to second what additional negative reviewers have said… this book is such a disgusting rip off of the Lord of the Rings series that I cannot judge anyone could read it or recommend it. I selected this book up based upon recommendations from others I know and trust… others I know and trust whom I no longer trust and owe about 1191 punches in the face (the number of pages in this trash).
I am middle through at this point, and will continue to end, desperately hoping it will get better. But I see no indications that it will, and judging from some of the additional reviews… it won’t.
Save yourself the money and time and buy the Lord of the Rings, Goodkind’s Sword of Truth books, Salvatore’s Drizzt books, or any number of additional fabulous tales… just not this. If I convince even one person not to buy this dreadful book I will feel redeemed for purchasing it.
DON’T READ THIS! NOT EVEN FROM A LIBRARY! Unless you like horrible, dull, wordy, contrived, derivative garbage.

Terry Brooks had a excellent thought for a tale so it’s a bring shame on that it turned out as poorly as it did. This may be the worst written book to ever land between hard covers. Excellent fantasy has an element of rationality; this book is a tribute to the “escaping the avalanche…” school of writing. The characters are shallow, the adventures are trite. It’s rare that I don’t end a book once I start to read it, but there was no way I could get through this dribble. If you MUST read this, at least buy a second-hand copy; using paper to print more copies of this is nothing less than a sin.

…to see how closely a name could copy the Lord of the Rings and get away lacking being sued for breach of copyright.

This is an ok book but it basically follows a common fantasy storyline “a tiny town nobody turns out to be the only one that can save the world” but lacking introducing anything new. The book just is missing memorable characters and origanal thoughts you just don’t get pulled into the tale at all. this book may have more pages than the lord of the rings but the lord of the rings has more on the pages, so if your thinking of reading these books i would suggest just alternative up tolkien it will much more worthwhile.
