Product Description
Child psychiatrist Andrew Marlow, devoted to his profession and the painting leisure activity he likes, has a solitary but ordered life. When renowned painter Robert Oliver attacks a canvas in the National Gallery of Art and becomes his uncomplaining, Marlow finds that order ruined. Desperate to know the secret that torments the genius, he embarks on a journey that leads him into the lives of the women closest to Oliver and a tragedy at the heart of French Impressionism.
Kostova’s masterful new novel travels from American cities to the coast of Normandy, from the late 19th century to the late 20th, from young like to last like. THE SWAN THIEVES is a tale of obsession, history’s losses, and the power of art to preserve human hope.

I really don’t want to be unfair to a writer. They place a lot of hard work into making a wonderful form of entertainment for the public. But, I’m worried I have no choice but to rate this book as 1-star.
Due to actions of the publisher, the book was unreadable — factually. If a book is unreadable/unavailable, I can’t reflect of a better reason to give it 1 star. I would have loved to have agreed this book a glorious review, but by withhold the ebook version the publisher has made this desire impossible.
You may question, “Wouldn’t it just be better to vote with your wallet and not buy the book? It is unfair to punish the leader by giving a terrible review.”
NO. The fairest thing possible is to get publishers to stop this practice. Just consider how much the publisher’s actions are hurting the authors that you want to support. When a book is unrestricted it is usually accompanied with a huge marketing effort, and it is hoped that enough buzz will be generated to get people to buy the book. Sorry to say, the leader is irreparably harmed if the ebook version is not available. I flat out won’t buy a paper based book, and there are a lot of people exacly like me. Four months later, when the marketing buzz of a new relief has died down, it is also not likely that I will remember I wanted the book, or that I will go back and buy the book (unless it is something I REALLY want). As a replacement for, in all likelyhood, in four months I’m going to be more interested in a new relief by a more progressive publisher and leader. Withholding the relief loses sales and hurts authors. Authors do not receive ANY royalties from people who don’t buy their book.
The most effective way to get publishers to stop this horrible business practice is to give books that use it a 1-star-review. Some have suggested that Kindle owner just email the publisher. You try emailing a publisher and see how far that gets you. You’ll be lucky to get a form letter back in response. Two years later and I’m still waiting to hear back on getting ebook versions of Fahrenheit 451, Catcher in the Rye, To Kill A Mockingbird, Catch 22, Diary of a Young Girl, The Sound and the Fury, and a couple dozen additional “classics”. But, if you affect a publisher’s sales it is a different tale — change happens quick. And make no mistake about it — people look at persons ratings and if a book has 100 or more 1-star-reviews they’ll probably buy something else.
Yes, this may affect an authors sales in the fleeting term, but in the longrun authors are far better off if we can get this practice by the publishers stopped. Not doing anything to stop the practice is far more detrimental to the authors. (You disinfectant a wound even if it hurts in the fleeting term.)
Now you may be thinking, “But shouldn’t the Amazon rating system only be applied to the content of the book? If you haven’t read the book you shouldn’t rate it.”
We’ll let’s apply that logic to the recording industry. Let us suppose that Eminem (or your favorite artist) is going to relief a new baby book next week. Can you imagine the negative reviews that would occur if it was announced that the baby book would ONLY be available in CD format. If you wanted the iTunes or a downloadable format then you would need to wait for several months. People would go nuts, and the reviews here would be in the toilet. Why on planet should the result be any different when a huge publisher tries pulling this as a replacement for of a huge record producer. Also, as I stated at the top of my review, I can’t reflect of a better reason to give a book a 1-star-review than the book is unreadable/unavailable.
You may reflect, “Why shouldn’t Kindle users be OK with waiting for the ebook version? After all, people who want paperbacks are OK with waiting.”
Ebooks are NOT the digital equivalent to paperbacks. I know publishers releasing hardcovers prior to cheap paperbacks. Publishers and authors make more profit on the hardcovers. A person may prefer the cheaper fee of the paperback, but if they really want the book they will buy the hardcover.
There are two flaws in this arguement as they tell to ebooks. First, a person who buys ebooks most likely doesn’t want ANY type of paper based book — hardcover or paperback. An ebook is entirely different as it provides functionality not present in paper based books. With an ebook you can carry your entire library in the palm of your hand, you can search the book, you can have the computer read the book, you can change font sizes to help your tired ancient eyes, it is more friendly to the environment, etc. Personally, I don’t want a paper version of the book at all, and if you don’t want a paper version then you have no options. You must wait several months — period.
Secondly, costs. Hardcovers provide more profits than paperbacks. This is not the case with ebooks and in fact just the opposite is right. Ebooks have VERY high margins since they do not have printing, distribution, warehousing, and seller returns costs. They also are not resold and never need go out of print. Currently, Amazon is paying publishers the same for ebooks as they are for hardcovers, so publishers are building huge profits on ebooks. This is vital, so keep in mind that publishers are being paid by Amazon the SAME as they are for hardcovers, but that the COST of the ebook version is substancially LOWER. So why would the publishers not relief the ebook version at the same time as the hardcover? They are worried that Amazon won’t continue to pay them the same high rate in the future, and they are not releasing the ebook version as a means of exerting control over Amazon.

I would buy this book, if it were available in kindle format. By April, when the kindle format will be available, I either will have gotten it from the library, or my interest will be elsewhere.

It was very hard to end this book. It was incredibly dull with a nonexistent plot and dull characters.

This is the first Kostova book I have read.
I will not be reading any others.
The concept which is what attracted me was fascinating but so self-indulgently rendered. The book was needlessly long and lacked the capacity to engage me in the dull descriptions of artistic techniques and paintings I may never see. If it had been well done I expect I would be haunted by well-evoked pictures….as a replacement for I am haunted by the loss of the time I spent reading a book which I truly did not delight in.

I had to read this book because I read “The Historian” and it is one of my favorite books, so I ongoing and kept reading thinking surely this will get better, some explanation is coming of why this Oliver is in the hospital, and why so many details for the minor characters are being clarified in excrutiating and dull details, then by 50% of the pages being read, I had that gut feeling that I would be disappointed, and I was. This book has nothing excellent in it, I skipped hundreds of pages and it seems that I missed nothing, the tale is so lame and dull that I nearly requested my money back. What happened? is this the same lady who wrote The Historian or she got bored and request some 20 years ancient to write it for her? Sorry but do not spend any time reading this book, it wasted a week of my life and I wish I could get it back.
