These two irreversible episodes mark Alice and Mattia’s lives for ever, and as they grow into adulthood their destinies seem intertwined: they are divisible only by themselves and each additional. But the shadow of the lost twin haunts their relationship, until a chance sighting by Alice of a woman who could be Mattia’s sister forces a lifetime of secret emotion to the surface.
A meditation on loneliness and like, The Solitude of Prime Numbers questions, can we ever truly be whole when we’re in like with another? And when Mattia is questioned to choose between human like and his professional like — of mathematics — which will make him more perfect?

This must be the best book I’ve read in years (and I read a lot) and certainly one of the best books I’ve ever read. I’m not going to give anything away about the plot additional than that it’s about two people who so desperately want to be together. Go on,trust me and take a chance…you’ll be rewarded for reading this book.

This is not a tale that fits into any traditional tale speech. You cannot predict what will take place nor are there any heart racing moments that make a page turning saga.
But it is a wonderfully intellectual tale about two people who are deeply affected by events in their childhood. Mattia and Alice seem to be destined for each additional but are so broken and unable to realize what they want or to communicate their desires that they just can’t make a relationship work in the traditional sense. What you realize as you continue reading is their relationship, even though they are countries apart, is still there in their hearts and their minds.
This is not a tale with clean and tidy explanations. There are events that start and never end but are left to your imagination to fill in the blanks. This tale does not have lots of pleased, warm fuzzy moments but it is a fantastic book to read because of the depth of the characters and the intricacies of their thoughts and relationships with the world around them.
I was amazed knowing that this was a translated version. I commend Shaun Whiteside for seeming to capture the right essence of the book in his translation.
It is well worth reading but may not fit into the traditional quick read and simple plot that some look for in a bestseller.

Have you ever come across a bug and said that’s got to be new species, never seen anything like it before.?
That’s how I felt getting to know our two main characters in The Solitude of Prime Numbers by Paolo Giordano. Alice and Mattia were so weird to me, I was fascinated and they never burned out. Believable yet I have never met anyone like them. Every time they screwed up I was pulling for them to maybe find some peace although they would never be “normal”. I won’t list the plot as additional reviewers how done so but I will say its worth a read, I liked it and if he did a sequel I would be willing to read that to.

Paolo Giordano’s debut novel The Solitude of Prime Numbers tells a unique tale. The action of the novel branches from parallel tragedies the two protagonists veteran early in life. Mattia struggles to recover from being reliable for the disappearance of his mentally challenged twin sister. For Mattia his lost sister represents all he fears from participation in the physical world; women will permanently be a danger to him. He withdraws into his own mind, stabilized by his genius, mathematics, and routine of self inflicted pain.
Mattia’s torments exist in the mental realm whereas Alice suffers in the physical world. A skiing manufacturing accident left Alice a cripple, with a deep scar, and even deeper rage toward the father she blames for her manufacturing accident. Unable to prompt her rage towards her father, she projects it as a replacement for towards food, and struggles with anorexia for the rest of her life.
For these young people, the result of their tragedies is bring shame on and isolation. Both drive away all persons who would care for them. They meet at a party and join forces. Together they survive with their solitary souls intact. Their only support is the special tie they share as a pair of prime numbers.
The underscored theme of Giordano’s ode to solitude is survival. Mattia and Alice find might from within to deal with life’s curves but sacrifice their tie to their surroundings. Both struggle with the temptation to disappear; Alice’s anorexia eats away at her body and Mattia retreats into his mind.
The Solitude of Prime Numbers is a painstakingly enjoyable read. We care about the fates of Mattia and Alice and are truly surprised by the events of their lives. Giordano, an Italian physicist and debut novelist, clearly approached writing this book with the dedication and inventiveness of thought of a mathematician. Every character has a tale that is inventive yet also accessible.
