I have her two additional books and I so wanted to like this book too – it had fantastic reviews. I ordered it and as soon as I got it I tried building 4 recipes out of it. The hot cocoa oatmeal bombed, my children had two bites and then confirmed it yucky. I then made the strawberry vanilla breakfast cookies and the mommy barley bars, both were not fantastic tasting at all. My two year ancient took one bite of the strawberry vanilla cookie and spit it out and the rest went into the trash – they didn’t cook up right. I realize the barley bars are more for moms but I have to admit I can reflect of plenty of additional things to eat in the morning than this. The fourth thing I made were the raisin cookies for breakfast. My kids ate a couple of them but weren’t delighted. Like I said, I usually cook “sneaky” and have her additional two cookbooks. I also have Deceptively Tasty and my kids like the recipes from there too and I guess since I have made additional things it made me realize how terrible these were. Tough sell on the kids. Also there are typos such as it references the strawberry puree recipe is on pg 61 when it is 51 etc…I am returning this book.

I was a small disappointed with these recipes, as they certainly are not for picky eaters. My 3-year ancient is very picky and doesn’t like sauces and that’s where the sneaky ingredients are hidden. The only thing that worked on my daughter was the baked stuff: cookies, cakes (she offers quick fixes for boxed cake mixes). I use this book maybe once or twice a week, for special treats but not for daily meals.

I checked this book out of our local library 3 times and then realized I just needed to own it. I am pleased with the book overall – have establish several tasty recipes that my family tree likes. The purees used in most recipes do take some prep time in advance, but after you have all your purees in the freezer, most recipes are pretty quick. I especially like the recipes for Quick Fixes (for store-bought brownie mix, pancake mix, etc.). These take very small time and add some healthy stuff to food the kids like. Worth having in your cookbook library if you have picky eaters in your family tree.

The Sneaky Chef just makes sense! What’s Not to Like: excellent recipes, nutrition and fun. I’ve learned so much about nutrition through Missy Chase Lapine’s series. Her recipes really do work and it simply feels excellent, not just for the kids but for me too. Mom and Dad need an extra boost of nutrition in every meal as well. I’m at the point now if I don’t add some secret “goodness” to my dish, I feel like it’s missing something. Thanks Sneaky Chef for the work you do!
