When his father returns East to collect the rest of the family tree, 13-year-ancient Matt is left alone to guard his family tree’s newly built homestead. One day, Matt is cruelly stung when he robs a bee tree for honey. He returns to consciousness to learn that his many stings have been treated by an ancient Native American and his grandson. Matt offers his only book as thanks, but the ancient man as a replacement for questions Matt to teach his grandson Attean to read. Both boys are suspicious, but Attean comes each day for his lesson. In the mornings, Matt tries to entice Attean with tales from Robinson Crusoe, while in the afternoons, Attean teaches Matt about wilderness survival and Native American culture. The boys become friends in spite of themselves, and their inevitable parting is a moving tribute to the ability of shared experience to overcome prejudice. The Sign of the Beaver was a Newbery Honor Book; leader Elizabeth Speare has also won the Newbery Medal twice, for The Witch of Blackbird Pond and The Bronze Bow. (Ages 12 and older) –Richard Farr

This is by far one of the worst books I have ever read. one star is the lowest I could go but I would give it negative ten. I was forced to read this atrocious book in the 4th grade, 4 years later I am still repulsed. Who really wants to read about a boy and a indian tribe. …

I have to read this book at school. I would rather get a booster shot (which i did a few days ago, very disturbing!) It has no point! There is only ONE person in our class who liks it! It is obviuosly not a book i would sit down, start reading, and not be able to place it down! Here are some tips:
1. If forced to read, skim, skim, skim, nothing appealing happens anyways!
2. Do something else while reading it, it will take your mind off of it’s hideous content
3.Teachers: Pleeeeeeeze do not make your children suffer this torturful book! Reflect about them!
4. If you either like (and i mean LOVE) the wildlife, or you’re alone in the wild for nearly a year… definitley read this book!!!
Reasons this book stinks:
1.No point!!!
2. Yucky and distgusting
3. Makes hunting sound like a excellent thing!
4.May offend people with indian relitives or is an indian (or people who like indians, of course)
5. Might factually bore you to tears!!!!!!
Now if you really reflect you will like this book, read it! I want to be an leader too, but i know my books will be way more appealing! Thank you for your time!

I did not like this book at all. I thought it was very slow and I would never read it again. I have read many books but this was the worst. … I could look at the sky all day and be more interested. You would have to be insane to like this book.
At one point they went fishing. Fishing is dull enough but this book went to the limit with it. He saw a fish. He missed it with his spear. …
