Product Description
One gorgeous summer afternoon, from her bedroom window on the second floor, Jody Linder is unnerved to see her three uncles parking their pickups in front of her parents’ house—or what she calls her parents’ house, even though Jay and Laurie Jo Linder have been gone nearly all of Jody’s life. “What is this fearsome thing I see?” the young high school English teacher whispers, mimicking Shakespeare. Polished boots, pushed jeans, fresh white shirts, Stetsons—her uncles’ suspiciously clean visiting clothes are a disturbing sign.
The three bring shocking news: The man convicted of murdering Jody’s father is being unrestricted from prison and returning to the tiny town of Rose, Kansas. It has been twenty-six years since that stormy night when, as baby Jody lay asleep in her crib, her father was shot and killed and her mother disappeared, presumed dead. Neither the protective embrace of Jody’s uncles nor the safe haven of her grandparents’ ranch could erase the pain caused by Billy Crosby on that catastrophic night.
Now Billy Crosby has been granted a new examination, thanks in large part to the efforts of his son, Collin, a lawyer who has spent most of his life trying to prove his father’s innocence. As Jody lives only a few doors down from the Crosbys, she knows that sooner or later she’ll come face-to-face with the man who she believes ruined her family tree.
What she doesn’t expect are the heated exchanges with Collin. Having grown up practically side by side in this very tiny town, Jody and Collin have had a long history of carefully avoiding each additional’s eyes. Now Jody discovers that bottom their antagonism is a shared sense of loss that no one else could possibly know. As she revisits ancient wounds, startling revelations compel her to uncover the treacherous truth about her family tree’s tragic past.
Engrossing, lyrical, and suspenseful, The Scent of Rain and Lightning captures the essence of tiny-town America—its heartfelt intimacy and its darkest secrets—where through struggle and hardship people still dare to hope for a better future. For Jody Linder, maybe even like.

I made the mistake of reading this book right after John Grisham’s “Ford County Tales”. Grisham’s prose is so elegant and succinct – there’s not an extra sentence or a repetitious moment. Scent of Rain etc on the additional hand overflows with unnecessary verbiage. I establish myself skimming the last third of the book since (at least) I was curiuos as to the outcome. I’m surprised at the excellent reviews for this ordinary book and certainly don’t recommend it.

THE SCENT OF RAIN AND LIGHTENING by Nancy Pickard takes the reader deep into modern day Kansas. The terrors of childhood rush back for Jody Linder the summer before she starts a new stage in her life. She has never known what happened to her mother the night her father was murdered. The man convicted of her father’s killing is unrestricted from prison for a new examination.
Billy Crosby has few if any redeeming qualities, but he claimed he was innocent of the crime for which he was imprisoned. His son, Collin has graduated from law school is his father’s best defense because Collin watched him sleep the entire night the murder was committed to prevent Billy from harming his mother, but no one listened to a tiny boy.
The strong Linder clan has small reason for second doubts as Billy’s obsession with revenge does nothing to change their convictions.
THE SCENT OF RAIN AND LIGHTENING is a powerful tale of admirable people who do the best they can under terrible circumstances and it is a worthy addition to the acclaimed THE VIRGIN OF SMALL PLAINS.

Memorable.. this book is so refreshing and makes you remember why you read books. Nothing like a excellent book to escape to. We go back and into the world in time, just a bit but it flows so nice, you won’t even notice, you will become so deep in Jody’s life and the whole Linder family tree.
You will want to find out if Billy really did murder Hugh-Jay and Laurie, or perhaps it was one of the brothers on manufacturing accident? Maybe Laurie did it, was a thought of mine.
Jody is a really believable, likable character and you will find yourself right alongside her.
Delight in this one, it goes by quickly! I will be checking out Ms. Pickard’s additional books, she is a wonderful writer!

Enjoyable read with a twist at the end of the murder mystery that I really should have guessed. The final pleased ending was pretty obvious, but well done. In my opinion, this book is worth the fee.

This book was just OK for me. It’s not that I disliked it, but it was nothing I’d lose sleep to end.
What I did like:
* The thought of a name maybe being not guilty but not innocent at the same time. The leader really did a excellent job of building the reader reflect about how not everything is black and white: Just because a name is on the incorrect path and seems to be a terrible person because his or her behavior is atrocious, doesn’t automatically mean when a crime is committed, this person has done it. I liked how the leader seemed to try to get me to feel sympathy for some villains and feel less than loyalty for the heroes and heroines.
* The atmosphere and setting of the tale. I loved tasks done around the ranch and the description of the storms and scenery. Loved the Rocks and the part it plays in solving part of the mystery/tragedy.
* The shifting of time frames worked well and I had no problems following it – it felt right, not distracting from the tale.
What I did not like:
* While I liked the characters, I did not feel especially fond of any of them. It’s not that they were shallow, really – I just felt like something was missing. Jody’s life (Jody is the orphan, and she’s seen in both time frames, as a 3-year-ancient and as an adult) seemed so limited – it was mentioned briefly, twice, that Jody was soon to start teaching high school. I wish the time frame had been different and she had been teaching already – it would have agreed a nice additional angle to who she was.
* Jody’s relationship with Collin (he’s the son of the man accused of killing Jody’s dad) – I wanted more of it. I liked the small bit that was there, but I felt the leader really skimped on Jody & Collin’s tale and the tale suffered because of it. The ending didn’t feel as believable to me, but more rushed, rushed into some sort of resolution.
This book isn’t terrible. The tale is clear, the characters are OK, there is resolution – but the extra *Zing* or thrill of being involved in a fantastic book is not there.
