Product Description
When Dr. Herbert Benson introduced this simple, effective, mind/body approach to relieve stress in The Relaxation Response twenty-five years ago, the book became an instant national bestseller. Since that time, millions of people have learned the secret of the relaxation response–lacking high-priced lectures, drugs, or prescription medicine. The tremendous success of this approach has turned The Relaxation Response into the classic reference recommended by most health care professionals and authorities to treat the harmful effects of stress.
This revitalizing, therapeutic approach, learned by Dr. Benson and his colleagues in the laboratories of Harvard Medical School and its teaching hospitals, is now routinely recommended to treat patients suffering from heart conditions, high blood pressure, chronic pain, insomnia, and many additional physical ailments. Requiring only minutes to learn, and just ten to twenty minutes of practice twice a day, the Relaxation Response has proven to be one of the most effective ways to relieve the tensions of modern-day living for a richer, in excellent health, more productive life.
Amazon.com ReviewWhen you look at the popularity of mind-body medicine today, it’s hard to know what a groundbreaking book this was when it was first published in 1975. Based on studies at Boston’s Beth Israel Hospital and Harvard Medical School, Dr. Herbert Benson showed that relaxation techniques such as meditation have immense physical benefits, from lowered blood pressure to a reduction in heart disease. The Relaxation Response demystifies the mantra meditation used in the transcendental meditation program, explaining how anyone can reap its advantages with or lacking the help of a guru. If you want to know the beginnings of today’s alternative medicine movement, or if you’re simply looking to learn a simple meditation technique lacking a lot of metaphysical trappings, this is a excellent place to start. –Ben Kallen

Truly a remarkable book. I’d been curious about meditation for years and it was Benson’s book that finally got me to sit down and do it. I didn’t know what he was talking about — all the science and stuff — and my sleep has suffered tremendously. I cut out coffee, but still, after practicing these techniques I can now only get about 1-2 hours of sleep at the most. You can just imagine what this did for me. Yee gads. I feel more relaxed and at peace, something traditional religion had never agreed me. My co-workers have noticed a certain difference, and I’ve only been at it for a few years. My most recent employee evaluation was not a excellent one. I’m not sure if it’s related, but my skin dried up soon after I started meditating. It’s nearly spooky how rapidly things start to change. I’m certainly going to continue!

This book is certainly an alternative to Transcendental Meditation. A person reading and mastering this book no longer has to spend the money to be taught by a TM teacher. Moreover, it clears up all the mysteries surrounding TM. TM is a excellent and effective way to invoke the power and wisdom of the subconscious mind and not infallible magic.
The most significant part of this book is the part dealing with the rules of eliciting Relaxation Response. The rest deals with basic medical and phisiological knowledge concerning stress and its related problems together with the test results the leader used to justify the techniques he advocated.
I agree with him 100% but I am not sure if these theories and results can convince readers from all walks of life.
To me, poring over Charles Haanel’s ‘Master Key’ and practicing the techniques in this book will be absolutely fantastic and convincing.

This book and the so-called “relaxation response” is absolutely NOT an alternative to Transcendental Meditation. The “relaxation response” theory emerged in the 1970s after the first scientific studies on TM were published. Persons studies establish that TM produces a distinct physiological state. It was hypothesized by Benson that all additional meditation and relaxation practices would produce the same “low-stress” state and same benefits as TM. Although the relaxation response theory gained widespread acceptance for decades, comparative data on different practices never substantiated the hypothesis and it has now been invalidated by subsequent research, including randomized controlled studies and meta-analyses showing that different relaxation and meditation techniques have different effects.
EEG research shows that the “relaxation response” does not produce the same brain patterns as TM (during TM there is typically frontal alpha EEG coherence, and also intra-hemispheric coherence is regularly recorded as well as coherence from the front to the back of the brain–see the latest issue of the neuroscience journal “Consciousness and Cognition).
Research also shows that the physiological state commonly gained during TM differs from the proposed physiology of the relaxation response, with TM producing significantly greater decreases in oxygen consumption, respiratory rate, heart rate, muscle tension and blood pressure, and a greater increase in skin resistance (all showing a more restful state). It was also learned that many physiological changes occur during TM practice that are not present during the relaxation response technique—and some are in the opposite direction, such as increased cardiac output (despite decreased heart rate), increased blood flow to the brain and the widespread alpha coherence.
TM provides the experience of a unique state of physiological functioning, different from ordinary waking, dreaming and sleep — a proposed fourth state of consciousness that is different from the relaxation response in many ways.
The main difference is, TM allows awareness to transcend thinking and settle deeply inward, to the state of pure consciousness, described as the most creative, blissful, and peaceful level of the mind. This experience of transcending mental activity is a much different process from the relaxation response technique, which tends to keep the mind active on a “mantra” and attentive to breathing.
Hundreds of independent scientific research studies support the principle that it is the experience of transcending during TM, and not just relaxation, that is reliable for TM’s wide range of benefits for mind, body and behavior — accumulative effects not establish to result from the relaxation response or ordinary eyes-clogged rest. See “The Myth of the Relaxation Response” for a scientific discussion of all these issues: http://www.truthabouttm.org/truth/TMResearch/ComparisonofTechniques/RelaxationResponse/pointer.cfm
this is a weird site. it inserts weird links and rearranges some of your words. the third sentence was supposed to read “Persons studies establish that TM produces a distinct physiological state. It was hypothesized by Benson that all additional meditation and relaxation practices would produce the same “low-stress” state and same benefits as TM.” and only the last link is valid.
it did it again. oh well, the reader will get the gist of it…
