The Real Thomas Jefferson: The Right Tale of America’s Philosopher of Freedom
Jefferson is the central figure in American history, and…he may yet prove to be the central figure in modern history. So stated noted historian Henry Steele Commager. And as the English novelist Samuel Butler once wrote, Though God cannot alter the past–historians can. His observation is especially applicable to our changing perceptions of fantastic past personalities, most of whom are relentlessly reinterpreted by each new generation of biographers.
There is no better example of this kind of metamorphosis than Thomas Jefferson, leader of the American Declaration of Independence and third President of the United States. Since his death in 1826, he has been alternately vilified and deified by writers of varying motivations. In The Real Thomas Jefferson, by allowing Jefferson to clarify his life and thoughts in his own words, we have tried to ensure that his spirit, not ours, will breathe in these pages so that all who read them will become acquainted with Jefferson himself — not another second-hand interpretation. His biography is set into the world in Part I, and Part II brings together the most insightful passages from his writings, arranged by theme.
Highly acclaimed by many, including Glenn Beck of the Fox News Channel. Published by the National Center for Constitutional Studies, a nonprofit educational foundation dedicated to restoring Constitutional principles in the tradition of America’s Founding Fathers. The National Center for Constitutional Studies…is doing a fine public service in educating Americans about the principles of the Constitution. — Ronald Reagan, President of the United States

I have establish a glaring inaccuracy in this book which stunned me. I have written the NCCS regarding it, with facts to back up my complaint, and have received no response from 3 people I emailed there. The inaccuracy is: p 88 “A few years later, this principle of separation of church and state would become part of the Constitution of the United States.” Contraire’-persons words cannot be establish ANYWHERE in our Constitution or the Amendments. Jefferson did use the term “a wall of separation” in a letter to the Danbury Baptists, but is is noteworthy that in the first Amendment, this terminology was purposely avoided in the establishment clause. Read it for yourself, the wording and intent prohibit the government from “establishing a religion” (such as the Church of England the founders had fled.) There is NO expression of separation whatsoever. But, separation of church and state can be establish here, in Chapter 5, Article 13: http://www.departments.bucknell.edu/russian/const/1918toc.html . Read it for yourself! This soviet Constitution from 1918 is after the Bolshevik Revolution, and is straight communist doctrine. I find it highly offensive to have a company reputed to be an power on the US Constitition perpetuate the lie regarding this issue. In my opinion, it casts aspersions on all 3 books of this series I bought, and I would gladly return them for a refund. Sadly, I cannot recommend this book. Jefferson was a fantastic man, he certainly deserves better than this.

A very well written, factuol book. But squeezes years of life into 4-5 large print pages. Not a book to be read if your looking for details about his life or service to the country. No need to have a 325 page glossary, should have been more information about TJ.

….I won’t add sophomoric as that would raise this volume to a level that it does not reach. This book, along with companion works about Washington and Franklin, has recently been pushed by conservative groups, and puffed by Glenn Beck on his show. Puffed is right. Now let’s be up front; I am a Christian, a conservative Republican, I like Glenn Beck, and you would look much to find a larger fan of Mr. Jefferson. I have finished Franklin (and this), and am starting Washington; I have not the expertise to review a bio of Dr. Franklin, but shall review Washington in due season….
This is well written, well organized, tripe. Jefferson would turn in his grave. It is most certainly a “positive” assessment, and thus I give two stars rather than one. But, the man’s whole life is merely skimmed, with the “negatives” either ignored, or glossed (the Aaron Burr examination, and the Restriction of 1807). I do give high inscription for its repudiation of the Sally Hemings myth, but Betsey Walker is nowhere mentioned, and Maria Cosway made out an innocent friendship. (Whether Jefferson was physically intimate with Mrs. Cosway or not, the whole business was improper). Martha Wayles Skelton Jefferson is “pictured” on page 39, when there are NO images of her (save for a silhouette). I don’t know who the photo represents; it’s not one I admit of her daughter Martha.
There are minor matters of facts gotten incorrect, and interpretations mis-interpreted, all thru. Jefferson DID NOT give us “separation of Church and State”…that is a political axiom from a letter written while President. He was no Christian, though I hope that somewhere along the line he made a choice that got him into heaven. Jefferson was probably either a Unitarian or a Deist, though he kept his religion private. He was certainly no “howling athiest”…he was not an athiest, and never howled!!
This is not a “terrible” book in the sense that Fawn Brodie wrote a terrible (indeed, horrible) book about Jefferson. It it the most positive, respectful, work about him I have ever read. Maybe I am too harsh…I cut my teeth on Dumas Malone (whose work the present volume cites frequently), and Merrill Peterson. THEY are the standard! If you have a fourth grader who wants to learn about the second greatest American who ever lived (after Robert E Lee), go for it. I will give the three volumes to a teacher friend to place in her elementary school classroom…that’s about where they belong.

The first thing anyone who reads these “The Real ….” books should realize is that they are extremely incomplete histories of the founding fathers, Jefferson in this case. The “real” in the title is questionable because the authors are trying to prove a religious/nationalist point rather than give a detailed explanation of Jefferson. The authors are writing specifically to a Mormon audience, and extremely right wing in the political thinking, read that as Glen Beck thinking. Ok, so the writing is well done, the structure of the book is very orderly. But, the leader tries to prove Jefferson was a Christian, which he wasn’t, nor was he Mormon (haha), and that he was somehow squeaky clean in his politics and personal affairs, which he wasn’t. My recommendation is if anyone is serious about Jefferson, they should go to books written by Jefferson scholars such as Ellis, Malone, Peterson or Jenkinson.
The authors, and readers should also realize that Jefferson was an enigma, and can not be pushed into a box to fit the thinking of one tiny faction who wants him to be their “hero”. Jefferson, yes, a hero of the early years of this country, but if you want to honor Jefferson, you need to see his personality and life, warts and all, no glossy make overs please.
So, would I suggest this book, no, well, maybe. I certainly wouldn’t buy it over another better documented and researched leader. If you find the book in the library, or a used book store, or in my trash bin, it’s worth a look, but that’s it.
