First off, I really cannot stand the use of “bible” in books these days. It’s a cliche and pretentious. Alas, I should have judged a book by its take in — having spent a couple of hours with this doorstop I am not impressed.
To start with, the art they have featured in the text is nearly lacking exception utter dreck. For example, if one were inspired to learn more about wooblock printing after being amazed by Japanese Ukiyo-E, what a letdown it would be to see the generic, primitive work in this book. Simlarly for etching and engraving; it has really taken the wind out of my sails in wanting to learn some of these techniques! The masters of past centuries would be aghast at the wear of their mediums and the simplistic usage of the materials.
The book gives a basic rundown of all the major fields e.g. intaglio, screenprinting and the rest, and has some pretty all-purpose how-to information with small pictures. I suppose this is okay, but I am having a hard time reading much of the text for the simple reason that it is filled with insipid, overwrought writing which makes me want to toss the “bible” across the room. From beside the point details about some mediocre artists’s childhood, to the utterly obnoxious statement of ink “proudly” showing itself on a lithograph… I dread reading much more for getting any more poisonous, gloppy corniness into my system.
As I permanently seem to do these days, I will locate older books on these subjects, when authors rarely adopted the harsh familiar tone of our current authors — and stuck to the task at hand.

The book’s title says it all. This honestly massive tome really IS a (kind of) printmaking bible, and it DOES give a (honestly) perfect guide to printmaking techniques. I say ‘honestly’, because what book could contain all information about such an enormous meadow? This book gives a fantastic oversight, and lots of insight, in a wide range of printmaking techniques. It’s clearly written, and perfectly illustrated. I like it.

I really have loved this book. It is filled with information on various forms of printmaking and fleeting tales on different artists in the printmaking meadow. I am very pleased with my buy.
