Product Description
Named one of the Best Books of 1999 by the Los Angeles Times, The Pianist is now a major motion picture directed by Roman Polanski and starring Adrien Brody (Son of Sam). The Pianist won the Cannes Film Festival’s most prestigious prize—the Palme d’Or.
On September 23, 1939, Wladyslaw Szpilman played Chopin’s Nocturne in C-sharp minor live on the radio as shells exploded outside—so loudly that he couldn’t hear his piano. It was the last live composition broadcast from Warsaw: That day, a German bomb hit the station, and Polish Radio went off the air.
Though he lost his entire family tree, Szpilman survived in hiding. In the end, his life was saved by a German officer who heard him play the same Chopin Nocturne on a piano establish among the rubble. Written immediately after the war and suppressed for decades, The Pianist is a stunning tribute to human endurance and the redemptive power of fellow feeling.
Amazon.com Review
Written immediately after the end of World War II, this morally complex Holocaust memoir is notable for its exact depiction of the grim details of life in Warsaw under the Nazi occupation. “Things you hardly noticed before took on enormous significance: a comfortable, levelheaded armchair, the soothing look of a white-tiled oven,” writes Wladyslaw Szpilman, a pianist for Polish radio when the Germans invaded. His mother’s insistence on laying the table with clean linen for their midday meal, even as conditions for Jews worsened daily, makes palpable the Holocaust’s abstract horror. Arbitrarily removed from the transport that took his family tree to certain death, Szpilman does not deny the “animal dread” that led him to seize this chance for escape, nor does he cheapen his emotions by belaboring them. Yet his cool prose contains plenty of biting rage, mostly buried in scathing asides (a Jewish doctor spared consignment to “the most wonderful of all gas chambers,” for example). Szpilman establish compassion in unlikely people, including a German officer who brought food and warm clothing to his hiding place during the war’s last days. Extracts from the officer’s wartime diary (added to this new edition), with their expressions of outrage at his fellow soldiers’ behavior, remind us to be wary of all-purpose condemnation of any group. –Wendy Smith

I realy wanted to like this book, and for the first half of this book I loved it.
The first half of “The Pianist” is an brilliant insight into a rarley told and very sad chapter in modern History, that of life inside the Nazi occupied Wasaw gettho. Indeed this part of the book is a delight to read it is as educational as it is chilling. The discription of the cruelty of the Nazi SS will go all but the toughest of hearts.
The problem I had with this book is the second half, starting with his escape by simply walking away from a work detail, seemed so improbable that I had a tough time beliving that this book was purely a work of nonfiction. Some of it could be right after all many Jews beat the odds in Europe during WWII, but Mr Szpilman’s tale just seems to me to have been overly embelished.

I do feel that this book is excellent, but the detail in this book is far to scarce for a theme so strong. Sometimes the lack of detail makes you skip over very imprortant parts of the tale, and the writer just made all of the events feel like nothing happened, and he never tell you how he felt in that situation.
A excellent book, but not reasonably there.

The book that inspired the movie by Roman Polanski is a excellent read and complements the movie well. I recommend you see the movie first but, so the surprise ending will not be spoiled for you.

This book is a must for all to read. You can’t go lacking reading this book. And the movie too as it is spectacular. The young should at least see the movie so they can be politically savy and prepared for persons who are in high power who wish to take away our rights. Because that is exactly what happened in this movie. It prepares one to see what happens with the government has too much power and the people do not have enough. God Bless America.
If Obama reform passes the Senate you will see the results of this book come to pass. The reform in the senate is the blueprint for this to take place to the people in America.
