As teenagers from a rough part of Newark, New Jersey, Sampson Davis, Rameck Hunt, and George Jenkins had nothing special going for them except loving mothers (one of whom was a drug user) and above-average intelligence. Their first stroke of luck was hard into University High, one of Newark’s three magnet high schools, and their second was finding each additional. They were busy staying out of distress (most of the time), and learning the usual ways to skip class and do as small schoolwork as possible, when a recruitment presentation on assault Hall University reignited George’s childhood dream of apt a dentist. The college was offering a tempting help package for minorities in its Pre-Medical/Pre-Dental Plus Program. George convinced his two friends to go to college with him. They would help each additional through. None of them would be allowed to drop out and be reabsorbed by the Newark streets.
Although this inspiring and simple-to-read book would be loved by any teenager or educator, it seems perfect for minority youth, especially young men of junior high and high school age, who may lack more immediate role models. If the ordinary boys who made this pact could survive college and medical school by sticking together, then so can others. –Regina Marler

I’m glad they were successful and hope they will continue to be successful. I am discouraged that they did this while they, on occasion, beat people, stabbed people, sold drugs, and stole things from stores. This is inspiring? What is the message here?
Break the bones of a white boy if he is staring at you (page 134)? Steal a sweatshirt because somebody told you it was simple (page 137)? Armed robbery (page 93)? “I jabbed the crackhead lightly in the thigh right under his butt and quickly clogged the blade, hoping I hadn’t hurt him” (page 81), after punching and kicking a helpless person for 20 minutes, wrote Rameck.
None of these messages were inspiring. I’d say these doctors have a lot to answer for, and these answers are not in this book.

Fantastic tale, dull book:
Me and my two friends grew up in a ghetto. We did some terrible things, thought about apt rap singers, then went back to our plot to be doctors. Shout out to all the teachers that guided us.
Fantastic job guys in apt doctors and dentists. The saddest thing about this book is you could have spent the time saving lives and fitting teeth as a replacement for of writing a book that bored me to tears. I had to force myself to end. I did it out of of obligation, not pleasure. Figured hey if these guys can become doctors, I can end this book-anything is possible if one puts there mind to it.

I painstakingly loved reading this book. It reads very well and the perspective that each of the three men gives is very appealing. I highly recommend it for any young person who wants to do something with their life.

Could become recommended reading for high schoolers. Fantastic tale but open in a bitty and poorly written manner. Not taking anything away from the three guys and their accomplishments, wait for the made for TV movie.

The audio version of this compelling inspirational memoir is brilliant. The authors speak in their own voices and my high school students are enjoying every minute of it. We are all waiting for the movie!!!
