What you don’t know can kill you.
In Texas a serial killer is executed, taking to his grave the identity of his only child.
In Boston a nine-year-ancient girl is abandoned in a hospital, then adopted by a wealthy young couple.
Twenty years later, Melanie Stokes still considers herself lucky. Until…
Until the terrifying visions start.
Until a has-been reporter starts investigating her past.
Until the first note arrives adage YOU GET WHAT YOU DESERVE.
Melanie had lost all memory of her life before the adoption, and now a name wants to give it back. Even if it includes the darkest nightmare the Stokes family tree ever faced: the murder of their first daughter in Texas. As Melanie pursues every lead, chases every shadow in the search for her real identity, two seemingly unrelated events from twenty years ago will come together in a treacherous explosion of truth. And with her very life at stake, Melanie will dread that the family tree she likes the most may be the people she should trust the least.

I was very, very, disappointed. The book was shabby, filthy, the pages had bits of food or additional debris on them. It was disgusting and I had to read the book with thin rubber gloves on.

After reading this book, I establish how admirable legendary writers such as the late Agatha Christie, John Chrisham or Michael Crichton are. The tricks made by the leader are clich?, and the characters are so predictable. Sometimes the characters?words and behaviors are not consistent (i.e. David’s conversation with ex-midwife and answer to Melanie a few pages later, and David’s whimsical physical status at the motel in Texas). I marvel how this book could be published lacking correction by some professionals (such as editors).

Melanie Stokes is the adopted daughter of Harper and Pat Stokes. They adopted her after their own daughter, Megan, was murdered by serial killer Russell Lee Holmes. Melanie was 9-years-ancient when she appeared in an urgent situation room where Harper Stokes was effective. She had been drugged and abandon, suffering from loss of memory.
Now, Melanie is 29-years-ancient and the memories of her first 9 years of life are coming back to her. Terrifying memories of Megan Stokes, a child she never knew. Then a reporter appears on her door step and makes a shocking allegation: Melanie is the biological daughter of Russell Lee Holmes. Melanie’s work starts to crumble and she must find the truth of who she is.
I am truly surprised by the high rating this novel has received. It was absolutely horrible! I read Gardner’s “The Survivor’s Club” several months ago, and I was reasonably taken with her work. Sorry to say, I cannot say the same about this book. The dialogue was painful at times because it was so incredibly poor. Gardner employed tired speechifying that frankly, came off as terribly corny.
And the plot was horrible! It was some contrived nonsense that sounded like it belonged on a soap opera. Plus, the characters were constantly re-hashing all of the events-to-date, like the reader needed a score card. It was just terrible.
I absolutely would not recommend this book to anyone. I will probably give Gardner another try, since my experience with “The Survivor’s Club” was so excellent.

This book was fantastic. It was a thriller with a like tale snuck in; I could barely place it down! It starts out in Texas. A serial killer is convicted and place to death for raping tiny girls. At the same time in Boston, a tiny girl is establish with no memory of her past, with the name “Daddy’s girl.” The whole tale is a bunch of twists and turns, as a name clearly wants the past to be present. At the same time, a name else wants daddy’s girl dead. An brilliant read- I give it two thumbs up!

this physcological mystery by Lisa Gardner. As is her way, she completely captures your attention from the start and is relentless in keeping you under her spell. A right magician in the art of bringing the reader to the brink of discovery and switching course down yet another incomprehensible trail.
Her characters: Meagan, the killer daughter of Dr. Stokes,Russell Lee Holmes, the death row child murderer awaiting execution, Mealanie the amnesiac daughter the affluent Stokes family tree adopt after learning her 9 years later in the hospital where Dr. Stokes works, her troubled brother, and David, the FBI agent, all are excellently described and lead us through a tangled maze of deception and suspense.
When bizarre things start occuring;notes are establish that say “YOU GET WHAT YOU DESERVE”, a reporter tells her she is the daughter of the murderer, Russell Lee; she starts to have flash-backs and her life becomes a living torment. And she fights…fights to find the truth and although she realizes her life will never be the same, at least she will have a life based on truth and not lies.
With every chapter you figure it all out, only to find out that your assumptions are incorrect and yet another clue has been added.
Superbly written, with strong character portrayal, and stimulating ‘visual’ effects. You will find this novel exciting, well-written and intense.
