The book “The No Complaining Rule” is an simple reading book with fantastic application to everyone. The book flows with fleeting chapters to keep one’s interest. It is based upon a real company where the “No Complaining Rule” is in force. The tale centers around a HR person named Hope who needs to generate an action plot to deal with the negativity at her company. The company is in crisis with batteries they manufacture igniting. Hope proposes “The No Complaining Rule” which is a tremendous success.

After reading Douglas Hubbard’s How to Measure Anything: Finding the Value of “Intangibles” in Business, I’m more weary of the use of anecdotes in building all-purpose rules or, for that matter, self assessments like the one Gordon uses – even when the anecdotes are as entertaining as his.
Still, Gordon makes a convincing case for a kind of “rule” about complaining (more of a guideline, since he admits some complaining is desirable). His objective is to curb the obsessive level of negativity as the primary result to an undesirable situation. He promotes, as a replacement for, a disposition of action to right terrible situations and who can argue with that?
In all, it’s an entertaining and quick read that seems to hit a chord with a lot of people.

Persons who have read the book will admit this review’s title uses one of the techniques outlined in “Three No Complaining Tools”.
The book is a quick read, enjoyable while still content rich. If you find negativity dominating your professional life, this book’s thoughts may help you change your culture. It is not a panacea; sound leadership involves reasonably a bit more than this simple concept. But, an organization practicing this rule is likely to provide its employees a pleasant, innovative environment that breeds success.
Favorite parts for me:

and this passage was particularly arresting for driving culture-change
“Even after she clarified that they were making a plot to take up his issues he was too bitter to work with her to make solutions. He said he would continue…and if the company didn’t like it, too terrible. Hope knew that he was right that many employees had lost their trust in management. It was the company’s leadership’s fault but she also knew that he needed to be let go. He was too all ears on the past and unwilling to go forwards.”
Four stars because of the bleeding positivity.

You absolutely must read this book. First of all, it is simple reading – you won’t want to stop reading until it is finished. It will make you reflect differently about life and your part in getting the most from it. Everything in the book is practical and very understandable. ENJOY!
