Whether or not this is helpful my largest problem with the book is the nude/pornographic drawings in it. It would be refreshing to have an art book that is just pure, clean drawings lacking having to deal with these kind of drawings.

Okay, first let me say that this is an okay book only for persons who are not an artist or just starting. I had this as a text book(drawing course for graphic design major in a tiny tech/bus school), and being I’ve been drawing since I could hold a writing utensil I establish it slightly insulting, especially being in a graphic design course. It’s really only for the untalented, along yes, I did get something from it the grids…but that’s it.

It would seem that most of the online critics praising this book have attended related seminars. or received instruction outside the volume itself. These “Right Side” books appear to have spawned a genuine cult. I can only add the following: this method didn’t work for me, it won’t work for most people, and these books don’t present anything new. Sure, if you invert an image, and spend 60 hours building a copy in soft-lead pencil, the resultant artwork will look like an original “Betty Edwards”.

I’m enjoying going through the exercises, and I plot to take a week long class using this book soon. I would HIGHLY recommend it!

This is Not a Excellent Art Book. I expected this book to have plenty
of artwork in it and step-by-step drawings showing how to draw
artworks and just a few words elaborating on the steps. As a replacement for
the 291 page book is mostly text and not artwork. But if you
want a excellent art book, I suggest Cartoon Animation by Preston
Blair. It is full of progressive sketches which clarify how
to do artwork. Or Steven Stipelman’s Illustrating Fashion
Concept to Creation is another suggestion by me. It is again
filled with artwork, here drawings of figure, face, hands,
body curve, and many clothing items.
As a replacement for of looking at Betty Edwards New Drawing on the Right
Side of the Brain for creativity, you can look at The Facts On
File Visual Glossary by Jean-Claude Corbeil which is a book
of entirely various line illustrations with name marks.
Or you could look at a detailed Internet listing of the
Library of Congress Theme Classification to expand your
creativity to all the point theme topics of a Library.
You could draw items of words falling under the subjects listed.
Or for creativity, you could type in various words into
Yahoo! Image and Google Image search engines and sketch or
do artwork based on the retrieved images.
But as a replacement for the New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain
just has two or three illustrations of drawing rules and
no useful artwork. You could even just pick up an Encyclopedia
if you wanted to look at not at all useful artwork choices.
