Thus, according to leader William Linz Wolcott, founder of Healthexcel, a company that provides metabolic typing for individuals, it stands to reason that different foods have very different effects on different people.
Wolcott believes that tailoring your diet to your body’s particular quirks–metabolic typing–will improve digestion, circulation, immunity, energy, and mood. To determine your type, he has you take a 65-question test (the questions range from nose moisture to how you feel about potatoes), then place yourself in one of three categories: protein type, carbo type, or mixed type.
The protein type is instructed to eat a diet that’s 40 percent protein, 30 percent stout, and 30 percent carbs. The carbo type gets 60 percent carbs, 25 percent protein, and 15 percent stout. And the mixed type should consume 50 percent carbs, 30 percent protein, and 20 percent stout, although this type has to play with the ratios a small more to find the optimal mix.

I am shocked and disturbed that anyone seeking excellent health would place their trust in this book. A truely misleading approach to individual nutrition-from an leader that has done no clinical research what so ever. Is Walcott a Doctor? NO! Is Walcott a Licensed or Certified Nutritionist? NO! Has Walcott studied at any reputable university or with a generally respected researcher? NO! Do yourself a favor and eat less, exercise more include fruits and veges,rarely eat animal stout or stout that is hard at room temp(butter,margarine) and stay away from this book and live!

The diet recommended for me by this book practically guarantees either heart disease or cancer according to all leading authorities on nutrition. An appealing concept, but for pure entertainment only.

I bought this book because it was recommended by Amazon.com. Very poor. Confusing and full of pseudo science. I liked their recommendation of You Don’t Have To Be Thin To Win. Excellent common sense book.

The fallacy of this book is its completely unscientific stance on “metabolic” types, a psuedoscientific thought whose time has long come and gone, except by certain diet extremists, to whom this represents being “individualized.” Most of the sources the authors cite have been long discredited by reputable nutrition authorities, and virtually all of their information is anecdotal. There is no reliance on published studies, or for that manner, any studies undertaken by the authors themselves. Their questionaire method of metabolic type determination looks convincing, but no rational person would judge that this could substitute for appropriate hard, expecially if you are the “high protein metabolic type” and have problems with cholesterol. Read and judge at your own risk.

As a fitness enthusiast for 20 years I devour every book I can. This book was ok at best. Since I’ve never met Walcott or Fahey I don’t know their motivation. When I read Andrew Weil I know where he is coming from, not because I know him personally but because he makes his motivation obvious through his many brilliant books. Please remember that sound nutrition is the basis of excellent health. The Metabolic Diet is a poor excuse for quality nutritional information. Its redeeming quality is the food choices are better than the predictable American diet.
