Product Description
The mother of Matthew Shepard shares her tale about her son’s death and the choice she made to become an international gay rights liberal
Today, the name Matthew Shepard is synonymous with gay rights, but before his grisly murder in 1998, Matthew was simply Judy Shepard’s son. For the first time in book form, Judy Shepard speaks about her loss, sharing memories of Matthew, their life as a predictable American family tree, and the pivotal event in the tiny college town that changed everything.
The Meaning of Matthew follows the Shepard family tree in the days immediately after the crime, when Judy and her spouse traveled to see their incapacitated son, kept alive by life support machines; how the Shepards learned of the incredible response from strangers all across America who held candlelit vigils and memorial services for their child; and finally, how they struggled to navigate the officially authorized system as Matthew’s murderers were on examination. Heart-wrenchingly honest, Judy Shepard confides with readers about how she handled the crippling loss of her child, why she became a gay rights liberal, and the challenges and rewards of raising a gay child in America today.
The Meaning of Matthew not only captures the past significance and intricate civil rights issues surrounding one young man’s life and death, but it also chronicles one ordinary woman’s struggle to cope with the unthinkable.

This left me and our book club perplexed as to who Judy was writing this for? Why aren’t there pictures of the family tree and the murderers?
There seem to be a lot of details left out about the family tree that left us wondering. If you are going to do this type of book you have to really go there.
The book sorry to say left us with a less positive image of Matthew Shepard than we had prior to reading it.

Very sad tale that a young man’s life was finished through despise and stupidity. Very moving tale hearing it all from the mother of the victim. What incredible parents Matthew had to be able to moce on and do the work they are doing today. No parent should ever have to face the pointless death of a child. Highly recommended. There is nothing that compares to hearing a tale straight from the person it affects.
I have a 19 year ancient gay nephew and luckily 12 years after Matthew was killed life seems to have stirred forwards and he is lucky enough to be supported and accepted by his family tree and friends. Hopefully he can lead a complertely pleased and safe life.

I wish that everyone would, at one time or another in their lives, read this book. It is soul crushing and hopeful at the same time. Even though there are some printing mistakes and even one or two grammatical errors it is well written for the most part. Fantastic book with a sad tale.

This book should have to be read by every boy and girl in a high school English class. It provides too much valuable information to not be used as an incredible teaching tool. Thank you, Judy for providing us a window into your life with Matthew. I am so glad I read this book. Do not pass up the opportunity to read this.
