Product Description
For over fifty years, J.R.R. Tolkien’s peerless fantasy has accumulated worldwide acclaim as the greatest adventure tale ever written. No additional writer has made a world as distinct as Middle-planet, perfect with its own geography, history, languages, and legends. And no one has made characters as endearing as Tolkien’s large-hearted, hairy-footed hobbits. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings continues to seize the imaginations of readers of all ages, and this new three-volume paperback edition is designed to appeal to the youngest of them.Amazon.com Review
A Christian can nearly be forgiven for not reading the Bible, but there’s no salvation for a fantasy fan who hasn’t read the gospel of the genre, J.R.R. Tolkien’s definitive three-book epic, the Lord of the Rings (encompassing The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King), and its charming precursor, The Hobbit. That many (if not most) fantasy works are in some way derivative of Tolkien is understood, but the influence of the Lord of the Rings is so universal that everybody from George Lucas to Led Blimp has appropriated it for one purpose or another.
Not just revolutionary because it was groundbreaking, the Lord of the Rings is timeless because it’s the product of a truly top-shelf mind. Tolkien was a distinguished linguist and Oxford scholar of dead languages, with strong thoughts about the importance of myth and tale and a deep appreciation of scenery. His epic, 10 years in the building, recounts the Fantastic War of the Ring and the closing of Middle-Planet’s Third Age, a time when magic starts to fade from the world and men rise to dominance. Tolkien carefully details this transition with tremendous skill and like, making in the Lord of the Rings a universal and all-embracing tale, a justly celebrated classic. –Paul Hughes

I like the silent sinister beggining – up until bree this book is excellent. So thats all i recommend you read. After this point for all it’s gratuitous description it becomes nearly a synopsis – all the atmosphere is gone. this atmosphere nearly returns in the mines of moria but is obliterated soon after by the elves. There are two reasons people delight in this book 1) they read it all so don’t want to admit it was a huge waste of time and 2) they are persons weird immature people who read sci fi/fantasy and haven’t selected up a real novel once in their thus far wasted lives…

This series is horrible beyond all conception. Tolkien overbloats EVERYTHING to the point where it’s absolutely ridiculous, and I loose tract of the plot amidst unimportant details. Reasonably frankly my only thought is I DON’T CARE WHO EVERYONE’S FATHER IS, IF YOU WANT ME TO KNOW THEN WRITE A PREQUEL, JUST TELL THE STORY IT IDIOTIC BRIT! I don’t know how a name who wrote something as excellent as “The Hobbit” could produce this junk. I reflect what happened was he had a bunch of notes left over, and wanted to cash in by writing a sequel, so he threw all the details he had onto a shallow plot, but sense it was to intricate to be called “dumbed-down” like most money-building sequels noone could attack it. And it was so intricate people have been trying to convince others for decades that they’re intellegent because they can know this book, but since noone understands it, noone can test them to see if they really do or not. Anyway, if you want a intricate plot you can know, read “Dune” by Frank Herbert.

Look, I like fantasy. But I just don’t see the appeal behind LOTR. It makes, well, absolutely no sense — It’s massively confusing, a hard read, and by the end of the 3 books I /still don’t know what the tale is about/. I just don’t get it. I /want/ to know, and I /want/ to like these tales.. But sorry to say, I just can’t follow the incredibly tough storyline. Sorry. At any rate, the leather take in is a really nice touch, but… These 3 books just aren’t for your average fantasy fan whom didn’t manage to be an honor roll student.

I honestly do not know what all the hype is about. I forced myself to read this book because all I had ever heard was how it was one of the best and most influential pieces of modern literature, but eight hours a day of manual labor would be a less tiresome task then trudging through this pile of rubbish.
In all honesty, the plot is entertaining, if you can find it. I am sure the Cliffs Notes of the LOTR are appealing and entertaining, but why anyone would want to torture themselves reading this collection is beyond me.
I read one chapter a night until I was done, and that was too grueling a task. I constantly establish my mind wondering and having to reread every page because it could not hold my attention.
You don’t have to judge the hype. This collection of books is really, really terrible and dull, and I wouldn’t wish the task of reading in on my worst enemy.

I was going to read “The Lord of the Rings” book trilogy about three years ago. But I have chose not to because of the spectacular “Lord of the Rings” movie trilogy. Sure there are some differences in the movie trilogy than what is in the book trilogy. But why read such a long tale when there is a movie trilogy based on it that goes by the books honestly well. It is a waste of time if you read these books now, isn’t it? But that is just my own opinion. I am sure the leader J.R.R. Tolkien’s “Lord of the Rings” book trilogy is a marvelous tale; but I am just sticking with director Peter Jackson’s movie trilogy as a replacement for. The next two Special Extended DVD Editions of “The Lord of the Rings” movie trilogy (“The Two Towers” and “The Return of the King”) will go by the book trilogy even better than the origional movie versions. The Special Extended DVD Editon of “The Fellowship of the Ring” has many added parts in it that are said to be in “The Lord of the Rings” book trilogy. So now I rest my case: I am a HUGE fan of “The Lord of the Rings” movie trilogy; but I am not a fan of the book trilogy.
