The pictures are gorgeous.
The storyline is dreadful.
It is entirely about intimidating the mouse into sharing the strawberry he selected. The ‘huge hungry bear’ is simply a tool being used to manipulate the mouse. The narrator doesn’t even TRY to get the mouse to share the strawberry, he leaps right into lies and manipulation.
We want to get rid of the book, but hesitate to even give it away – we’ll wait till we are near a fireplace and burn it. No child should be exposed to this sort of thing. The only possible value for this book is if it is used to help them talk about some adult in their life who has been pressuring them and manipulating them. Read it to them, and say “Do you have anyone in your life like the narrator?”

I bought this book based on all the fantastic reviews and was surprised how much I disliked it when it arrived. I like edgy, amusing and nontraditional children’s books but this book is just a tale about a narrator manipulating a small mouse into forfeiting half of his prized strawberry. Yuck.

The narrator spends the entire book telling the small mouse about the huge, hungry bear that will want to eat the strawberry. Needless to say, the mouse is apprehensive about this. Then at the end the narrator tells the mouse, “Quick! There’s only one way in the whole wide world to save a red, ripe strawberry from the huge, hungry Bear! Cut it in two. Share half with me. And we’ll both eat it all up.”
The illustrations are really cute. I just don’t want my kids to reflect trickery is okay. I wish this book had been about sharing.

I have a 2-1/2 year ancient daughter who enjoys intricate tale lines, so I bought this book because it is listed as appropriate for ages 4-8. A 4-year ancient would be too ancient for this book (never mind an 8-year ancient!). It’s a to some extent cute tale and it has fantastic illustrations, but it’s very basic book with few words and a very simple plot. Also, the message is about being devious (tricking the mouse to share its strawberry), when it would more appropriately teach the concept of sharing.

Bought this book for a one year ancient grandson. Selected it partly because it’s a hard book and the pages wouldn’t get riped. The one year ancient likes it allot, but his 8 year ancient sister likes it even better. It’s the cutest tale, and sis can read it to her baby brother, and does, over and over again. It’s the sweetest thing ever! Also the illustrations in this book are as excellent as they get.
