In this incredibly quick-paced thriller, a conspiracy hatched close to the Oval Office results in the kidnapping of the president and the slaughter of a company of Secret Service agents commanded by ex-Navy SEAL Scot Harvath. The tale careers from the ski slopes of Utah to the top of Switzerland’s Mount Pilatus and sets Scot on an impossible mission: recover the president, evade renegade Swiss spy Gerhard Miner and his cadre of trained agents, and elude the American conspirators who are hot on his trail. Framed for murder, his reputation in tatters, his ex- colleagues turned against him, Harvath finds an unlikely ally in a gorgeous Swiss prosecutor who’s been checkmated by Miner once too regularly. Together they play a high-stakes game of mixed “doubles” to save the president and uncover the conspiracy. Brad Thor’s debut novel is a tightly wound spy tale that makes up in excitement what it lacks in subtlety and character development. Ludlum fans will like it. –Jane Adams

Fantastic tale if you’re a fan of Mighty Mouse. Nothing of value that I could find, and I’ll stick to Vince Flynn.

I don’t consider myself a huge book connoisseur and am willing to read nearly anything, but I couldn’t even end this book. I got about 1/4th the way through and couldn’t take it anymore…I had to quit! The plot was lame, and the writing was juvenile. This is kind of how it goes: “Blah, blah, blah”, he said. And then he said, “I know. Blah, blah, blah and blah.” “You’re so right,” he said. “It’s blah, blah, blah!”, he said, nodding his head in answer. ….Give me a break!!! To top it off, he uses dialogue to clarify what’s happening or the setup for a particular scene. People don’t really talk this way because they implictly know what’s going on…they don’t need to state the obvious!! I probably should’ve taken the hint with this statement on the page following the dedication: “For reasons of national security, certain names, places, and tactical procedures have been changed within this novel.” Yeah, right.
Well, maybe Brad has matured as a writer and his subsequent novels are better, but for me, I will reflect twice before trying him again.

This could possibly be the worst book of it’s type that I’ve ever read. I can’t even bring myself to list all its failings. Please avoid this book like the plague. Try Vince Flynn as a replacement for.

In Brad Thor’s first thriller, the U.S. President gets kidnapped, the hero is implicated, and a round-the-world chase before long follows. *Yawn* Forgive me for being bored, but this book felt a bit too formulaic for me. There are undoubtably flashes of brilliance here and there, but overall it is a very average thriller.
One of the largest annoyances I had with this book was the lack of credibility. Though the plot is obviously far-fetched, you want to be able to judge that the events described are within the realm of possibility. I wanted to judge Mr. Thor’s yarn, but his descriptions of utah mormons (towards the beginning) obviously played to certain stereotypes. As a member of the LDS church, I was disappointed to see a blatant misrepresentation of what we judge. Though it was a honestly small thing, the leader obviously didn’t do his research and it caused me to question his later descriptions of the CIA, FBI, and Swiss government. Larger than that though, the book read like it was National Treasure. I just couldn’t take anything seriously.
I don’t expect huge things from a thriller, but this book fell not more than my expectations. There were a few parts that were enjoyable. Aside from a few cliches, the dialogue wasn’t dreadful. The constant action also made for some fun parts. In closing, there was enough here to cause me to look at another Brad Thor book, but this certainly wasn’t one of the best.

The book was to form, appealing, suspenseful for the most part, and kept moving lacking undo delays in forwards progress. The only thing that bothers me at times is that as excellent as Scot Harvath is deliberatly made out to be, he doesn’t sometimes “get it” untill chapters and days later. I as the reader have been privy to the same information he has had and am way yet to be in being able to figure out what happened or is going to take place. Therefore, I am not as excited as I should be when he does finally work it out. This makes a situation where the prose and writing style is the only thing that keeps me reading, with fantastic gratitude when the unknown looms it’s mysterious head.
