What a mistake it was to buy this book. It stank on ice. As a replacement for of being serious and meaningful it was just unadorned silly and shallow. Do yourself a favor and read the Indian (sub-continent) source material that the leader ripped off. I’m not sure I buy into this mystical tie between sports and spiritualism. Buy a excellent biography as a replacement for.

I expected much more from this golf meets “Meadow of Dreams” book. A week tale with sappy, over-the-top writing. The only lesson I learned was to not waste more time on books by the Leader. To make matters worse, the movie has been completely miscast. Robert Redford should be the golfer with Morgan Freeman as Bagger Vance. I don’t get it.

The movie is much different than the book, as many are, and in this rare case, the movie was better.
This book focuses too much on spirituality and life in an extremely Eastern sense to such an extreme degree that it becomes ridiculous. Its theme is much different from the “like of the game” all ears movie. After reading the first half of the book, I chose it was a waste of my time. There are a number of positive reviews, so I may be missing something … but I doubt it!

This book reminds me of “Meadow of Dreams” in that both books (or films) inspired a sort of religious vehemence among some readers/viewers. Look, this is only a fantasy tale. Nothing more. It’s fun to read past fiction about Jones and Hagen, about golf and life in the ’30’s, etc. But let’s not get carried away by the metaphysical stuff, okay?

I bought this book with fantastic anticipation, based on customer reviews and the fact that a major film was being made of it. While part of the novel was entertaining (bringing Hagen and Jones to life in a fictionalized way) the main premise was absurd and not entertaining. This book tries to described golf as a metaphysical/religious activity as a replacement for of the wonderful game that it is. I revere “Golf in the Kingdom”, with which this novel has been compared, as a classic study of why golf is an intellectually stimulating game. I threw “Legend of Bagger Vance” away when I finished it. It’s not even worth passing on to a friend.
