The book has a wonderful beginning and really takes you on a ride through an engaging and disturbing tale. The only problem is the end. Its one of the most anticlimax endings I’ve ever read and if Goodkind was trying to set us up for a sequel I’m not preparation on reading it. So if you have inclination to read this book, you will certainly read the whole thing if you read the first two chapters. But you may be sorry you did.

I was THRILLED when I saw that The Law of Nines was arresting the bookstores a few months before it was published. Having had the supreme opportunity to interview Mr. Goodkind twice before the relief of the last two Sword of Truth novels, I knew he wasn’t giving up writing–but he wasn’t exactly free with the details of what we could expect next from his fertile imagination–which is pretty normal. All I wanted was to confirm that more stuff was coming and I got my answer. Over the course of all 11 previous novels, he had come to EARN my respect, and I came to LOVE his books (only two of which I honestly did not seriously delight in).
So…how would his foray into the world of Contemporary Fantasy fare? I have to admit being a bit apprehensive about how he could pull it off. I knew I would more than likely really like it, but how would it, or COULD it compare with the best of the Sword of Truth series? I have to say, it fares reasonably favorably. I’m not sure if I would rate it as high as his original (and still my favorite) Wizards First Rule, but I REALLY loved taking a break from the world with the Boundaries into this one, and I was even MORE surprised to find the two worlds are connected. I then thought about Terry Brooks’ FANTASTIC Contemporary Fantasy series, The Word And Void and wondered if we would be looking forwards to a book a small TOO close to that storyline. Let me assure you the similarities are virtually non-existent.
Some have been critical of Mr. Goodkind adage he couldn’t choose whether or not this was a straight Thriller or Fantasy, claiming he just couldn’t make up his mind. If I know ONE THING regarding Terry Goodkind, having read all his previous novels and two very informative interviews WITH him, he is a meticulous person of fantastic preparation. He KNOWS where he wants his tale to go and guides us there with a very skilled hand. NEVER dread that Terry wasn’t absolutely 100% crystal clear as to what his goals were while writing The Law of Nines–we as readers cannot see the end from the beginning, but rest assured Terry does, and that is pretty much all that matters in my opinion.
The action is plentiful, and simply place I really like Terry’s style of writing. Some have problems with it, but honestly, it is exactly what I look for in a book to keep my interest and entertainment level on HIGH. I have a very simple yardstick in which I judge whether or not a book receives 5 stars or not: Is it one of the first things I reflect about when I wake up, and is it one of the last things on my mind before I fall asleep. Thankfully The Law of Nines passed my test with flying colors. Again, not everyone will agree with my opinion, but I am VERY excited for this new direction his writing is going and can, once again, hardly wait for the next installment to hit the book shelves.
Kudos yet AGAIN, Mr. Goodkind.

I’ve never read any fantasy series before. In 2007 I read all 12 of Goodkind’s SOT books within 7 months. Yes, it was that fantastic of a series. I establish LON at B&N for a bargain fee. Keen to read it, I read the reviews on here first. Because of some poor reviews, two days later I nearly returned it for a refund while on my way to work, but at the last minute, didn’t. I’m so glad now that I chose to read it. If you’ve read the SOT series then I’d unofficially consider this the 13th book in the SOT series. There are so many tie-ins, and hints as to what’s happened after the ending of Confessor, while still telling another fantastic tale.
If you do read it, let me know if you felt this review was accurate.
