The New York Times bestselling leader and master of medical suspense delivers another shocker of a thriller filled with insider details and a terrifying psychopath Four murders. Three accidents. Two suicides. One left… THE LAST SURGEON Michael Palmer’s latest novel pits a flawed doctor against a ruthless psychopath, who has made murder his art form. Dr. Nick Garrity, a vet suffering from PTSD—post traumatic stress disorder—spends his days and nights dispensing medical treatment from a mobile clinic to the homeless and disenfranchised in D.C. and Baltimore. In addition, he is constantly on the lookout for his war buddy Umberto Vasquez, who was plucked from the streets by the military four years ago for a secret mission and has not been seen since. Psych nurse Gillian Coates wants to find her sister’s killer. She does not judge that Belle Coates, an ICU nurse, took her own life, even though every bit of evidence indicates that she did—every bit save one. Belle has left Gillian a devious clue that connects her with Nick Garrity. Together, Nick and Gillian determine that one-by-one, each of persons in the operating room for a fatally botched case is dying. Their discoveries pit them against genius Franz Koller–the highly-paid master of the “non-kill”—the art of murder that does not look like murder. As Doctor and nurse go closer to finding the terrifying secret behind these killings, Koller has been agreed a new directive: his mission will not be perfect until Gillian Coates and Garrity, the last surgeon, are dead.

This book was disgustingly violent and tedious. I had to place it down after 200 pages. The tale goes nowhere. I liked Mr. Palmer’s earlier work. He is resting on past laurels.

If you are looking for a very thinly veiled assault on Bush-era neoconservative politics perfect with a Dick Cheney character spouting the bile of the extreme Right, then pick this one up. I establish it entertaining and honestly thought-provoking. The question here seems to be as follows: “When do we become the terrorists that we are sworn to ruin?” A timely question that we should all ponder.

Michael Palmer has yet again written a well crafted suspense novel involving characters that have real problems of their own yet manage to set them aside to help others and solve a medical mystery. The doctor in this instance is suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder from the war in Afghanistan and a nurse, Jillian, who was orphaned and now is coping with her sister apparent suicide, or was it? Together they team up and get to the root of the why personnel that had been involved in one operation several years before have nearly all died rumor has it that as accidents or suicides.
The tale is quick paced and I didn’t want to place it down so that yet again I have lost sleep to reading one of his books. All of this authors books are medically based but each one has a different theme so you don’t feel like you are reading the same book over and over again with only the names changed. He has written a griping tale and has tried to make PTSD more understandable to his readers. If you like medical thriller-suspense tales, you will like this one.

What a fantastic read. I sat down to read it in the afternoon when I had a few hours to spare, and THE LAST SURGEON finished up keeping me up well past my bedtime that same night. A terrifyingly plausible plot, well-drawn characters…Palmer is the master of the thriller.

Palmer’s prose keeps readers flipping pages — or pressing the arrow key, for persons with Amazon Kindle — to find out what comes next in The Last Surgeon, an absolute, unmitigated hit.
Set in Washington, D.C., physicians and nurses who were allegedly involved in an operating theater incident are being killed off one by one, and soon, Nick Garrity is finding himself within the cross hairs of the assassin’s gun. He and his associates — including a hot small nurse named Jillian — must reflect quickly in order to avoid death.
If you want your pulse to quicken, read this book.
