Product Description
Dr. Francis Collins, head of the Human Genome Project, is one of the world’s leading scientists. He works at the cutting edge of the study of DNA, the code of life. Yet he is also a man of unshakable faith in God and scripture.
Dr. Collins believes that faith in God and faith in science can coexist within a person and be harmonious. In The Language of God he makes his case for God and for science. He has heard every argument against faith from scientists, and he can refute them. He has also heard the needless rejection of scientific truths by some people of faith, and he can counter that, too. He clarifies his own journey from atheism to faith, and then takes readers for a stunning tour of modern science to show that physics, chemistry, and biology can all fit together with belief in God and the Bible. The Language of God is essential reading for anyone who wonders about the deepest questions of faith: Why are we here? How did we get here? What does life mean?

In this horrific book, Dr. Collins attacks the literal interpretation of Genesis Ch.s 1 and 2. He writes the following: “Hearkening back to Saint Augustine’s interpretation of Genesis 1 and 2, but . . . It’s clear that the ultra-literal Young Planet Creationist views are in fact not required by a careful, sincere and worshipful reading of the original text. In fact this narrow interpretation is largely a creation of the last hundred years, arising in large consequence as a result to Darwinian evolution”.
What an incredible statement! Not only does he NOT quote a single line from St. Augustine’s interpretation, not only directly contradict some of St. Augustine’s most vital quotes about the truthfulness of scripture, he makes a really fake aver that a literal reading of the first two chapters of Genesis is a phenomenon of the last 100 years! Let me take up these two lies here:
1) Let’s look at the actual words of St. Augustine on the theme of Genesis 1 and 2:
In St. Augustine’s “The City of God”, Book 10, Ch. 7 he writes “of the scenery of the first days, which are said to have had a morning and evening before the sun” “We see indeed that our ordinary days have no evening, but by the setting, and no morning, but by the rising of the sun; but the first three days of all were passed lacking sun, since it is reported to have been made on the fourth day, and first of all, indeed, light was made by the Word of God, and God, we read, separated it from the darkness, and called the light day, and the darkness night; but what kind of light that was, and by what periodic movement it made evening and morning, is beyond the reach of our senses; neither can we know how it was AND YET MUST UNHESITATINGLY BELIEVE IT.”
2) Finally, the aver that an `ultraliteral’ interpretation of Genesis started as a result to Darwinism in the 1800’s:
I’ve gone through the Geneva Study Bible, 1600’s, the Matthew Henry (1662-1714) Concise Edition Study Bible (which says about Genesis 1:1: “The first verse of the Bible give us a satisfying and useful account of the origin of the planet and the heavens. The faith of humble Christians understands this better than the fancy of the most learned men.”), John Gill’s (1697-1771) Exposition of the Bible, and so on, and I find that exactly the opposite of what Dr. Collins claims is right!
And when it comes to the first chapters of Genesis, notice that the sun is not mentioned. In fact, the Sun is not mentioned anywhere in Genesis until AFTER the time of the flood of Noah, in Genesis 15:2
My point in mentioning this devious but vital fact is that we really don’t know the structure and placement of the Planet, it’s neighboring planets, nor the Sun prior to the time of the flood. In fact, in stark contrast to the implications made by Dr. Collins about what “most Christians” thought about the Book of Genesis prior to the last 100 years, the unbelieving outlook of the scientific community and academia toward the Genesis creation account is based on huge assumptions, assumptions that have never been proven out, persons being the assumptions of a stable, uneventful Planet and Planet orbit, and a stable, uneventful solar system dominated by our current sun, as well as the assumption of an ancient Planet, dating back millions, even billions of years. None of persons assumptions have ever been customary as fact and are, in fact, the product of the published work and stated BELIEF of the dominant scientific and literary community of the last 150 years or so. I can recall from my history books a similar time, in the early 16th century, when the dominant scientific and literary community treated as fact the thought of an Planet-centric solar system, one where the Sun and the planets rotated around this planet. It was Copernicus and Galileo that suffered the fiery darts of scorn and rebuke from the “customary scientific community” of their day, just as people like Emmanuel Velikovsky, leader of “Worlds in Crash”, suffered unending scorn and rebuke in the last century from the scientific establishment for daring to place into the world and even publish the thought that the Planet and our solar system suffered catastrophic near-collisions in the last 3 or 4 thousand years with the planets of Venus and Mars, as clearly suggested by the plethora of examples about these two heavenly bodies in Greek and additional myths. and that the current positions and state of the planets of Saturn and Jupiter weren’t permanently a reality, an example being the weird event referenced in the New Tribute in the Book of Acts, Ch. 19 verse 35 “where a town clerk in Ephesus, in challenger to St. Paul`s proselityzing, said “Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there that knoweth not how that the city of the Ephesians is a worshipper of the fantastic goddess Diana, and of the image which fell down from Jupiter?”.
The secular scientific communities’ dismissal of the Genesis account of creation is based on the assumption of things as rudimentary as the part of an Planet day: how do we know how long an Planet Day was during the time of the Genesis account. St. Peter clearly states in his 2nd epistle “beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.” What do we know about the orbit of the Planet or the part of a day prior to the Flood? Nothing, that’s what.
There is so much we don’t know about the origin of our planet and the alignment of our planets in the very ancient past. One thing is clear, but, from the past record layed down on paper, parchment, clay tablets and stone by the very ancient Greeks, Assyrians, Persians, Babylonians, Israelites, Egyptians, Mayans, Chinese, Nordics and Indians, and that is that at one time in the very ancient past there was a period known as the “Golden Age”, a time where humans lived and breathed in an Edenic environment of peace and plenty, where they traveled across a land wherein stood a massive “world mountain” and a “tree of life” or “world tree”, the entire land being surrounded by a circular sea, and a time where gods (or perhaps more specifically, fallen angels) walked here on Planet, as well as giants and additional creatures too weird to be believed by the 21st century mind. These tales, as well as the later rampages of the planets of mars and venus all exist in the written accounts and legends of the ancients whether it be the tales of Zeus on Mount Olympus, or the Vedic Gods of India on Mt. Meru, or whether it be Odin and Thor and their reign from on high in Valhalla. But they also exist right there in your Bible, in places such as Genesis, Chapter 6. But I’m sure that Dr. Collins would be pleased to allegorize verses like Genesis 6:4 as well, and convince you that no one in the Church ever took that passage factually either.

Zero stars really. This is a predictable stance for a scientist who is a “christian” to save face and keep his job. I’ve known people like this in my past. They’re the ones who reflect they can have it all. Fame, notoriety, wealth, power, influence, glamour, and yes, even salvation and eternal life. I can tell Francis Collins is just this type of person. This is the very person the bible warns us about. A person of “pride”. Mr. Collins admitted he was raised in a “free thinking” household on a farm in a valley that elevated free though above all else (except for thinking about the bible of course, that was not allowed and he even admitted it, in so many words.). Well I guess that proves you can take the hillbilly out of the hills but you can’t take the hills out of the hillbilly. Also, since he and the Catholic church hold the same view on creation (theistic evolution), he nearly certainly must be a Catholic. That should tell you something right there. Catholicism has strayed so far away from scripture that it doesn’t know it’s right hand from it’s left hand anymore. Catholicism elevates tradition over scripture. They elevate the Pope over scripture. They elevate the Eucharist over scripture. They elevate the 7 sacraments over scripture. Should I go on? Let me just say that scripture is so far down on the list of priorites of the Catholic church that it doesn’t even register on their radar screen anymore (though it may have at one point in the church’s history, it clearly doesn’t anymore.)
Theistic evolution obviously isn’t the view scripture holds.
Dr. Emery S. Dunfee, ex- professor of physics at the University of Maine at Farmington says it best:
“One wonders why, with all the evidence, the theory of evolution still persists. One major reason is that many people have a sort of vested interest in this theory. Jobs would be lost, loss of face would result, text books would need to be eliminated or revised.”
Also, Dr. John Morris, president of the Institute for Creation Research says:
“Scientists see the evidence for creation, and they see it clearly, but peer pressure, financial considerations, political correctness, and a religious commitment to naturalism force them to look the additional way and insist they see nothing. And so, the illogical origins myth of modern society perpetuates itself.”
Call thiestic evolution whatever suits your fancy (“biologos” certainly tickles the ears), but it’s still evolution. A kind of politically right way of melding God with evolution for the 21st century. A way that the scientific community and “christians” can link up hands and sing around a camp fire in peace, harmony and tolerance for one another. And it’s also a excellent way for Francis Collins to be generally accepted by both his scientist colleagues and his laity and clergy all at the same time. An understandable position for a person of such high profile I would imagine.

I had an opporunity to read this title but would never recommend it to Humanist/atheists such as myself. Although well written, one does not have to be a scientist to debunk the contents. As a retired biologist and world traveller, I have for years not been able to accept very ancient, unproven biblical hearsay as compared to scientific knowledge. But with today’s right-wing society in the US this book should sell very well.
