In the Jesus Storybook Bible, God says to Adam and Eve, “Don’t eat the fruit on that tree…Because if you do, you’ll reflect you know everything. You’ll stop trusting me. And then death and sadness and tears will come.” It goes on, “(You see, God knew if they ate the fruit, they would reflect they didn’t need him. And then they would try to make themselves pleased lacking him. But God knew there was no such thing as happiness lacking him, and life lacking him wouldn’t be life at all.)”
In the Bible, in Genesis 3:5 the serpent tempts Eve with the forbidden fruit adage, “when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing excellent and evil.”
In the Jesus Storybook Bible, the snake says to Eve,”Does God really like you?…If he does, why won’t he let you eat the nice, juicy, tasty fruit? Poor you, perhaps God doesn’t want you to be pleased.”
The book goes on, “And a terrible lie came into the world. It would never place. It would live on in every human heart, whispering to every one of God’s children: ‘God doesn’t like me.’”
I won’t go on any further, the additional one-star reviews spell it out very well. It is the subtlety of the error that I find so alarming. I bought this book based on the rave reviews and had to return it.

We were keen to use this tale Bible during our family tree devotions (with children 1 & 3 years ancient) after it was recommended by persons we respect. Sorry to say we were disappointed by the art and tales that left something missing.

I won’t go into detail since enough additional people have written reviews, but I was very disappointed in this book. I heard fantastic things about this book and saw it was recommended on websites I trust to promote sound, biblical books. Sorry to say, this is not. She takes way too many liberties to the point that God is just “like, like, like”. She twists the texts to make a cutesie tale, and she pretty much ignores God’s additional attributes like his justice and consecration. It’s truly sad, and I will not be reading this book to my daughter. It was a wonderful thought to write a children’s books that talks about God’s redemption through Christ throughout every tale in the Bible, but that end goal was not executed well.

I am sorry to be negative here, but I have to caution persons that are interested in purchasing this Bible for their children. I bought this Bible and immediately saw some glaring problems. There is ALOT of paraphrasing here and much adding/omitting to/from the Word. It is NOT biblically accurate.
Right off the bat in Genesis it is said that the snake slithered up to Eve and said “Does God really like you?…the words hissed into her ears and sunk deep down into her heart, like poison. Does God like me? Eve wondered. Suddenly she didn’t know anymore.”
Is this what the Bible says in Genesis 3? No it is not. It says nothing about God’s like for Eve. The accurate account is establish in Genesis 3:1 “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden?” Do I want my young, impressionable 4 yo questioning God’s like for him? No.
I felt a real caution in my spirit when I sat down and started reading this Bible. I felt that I needed to review it b/f sharing it with my child. You would be wise to do the same.

This book was a gift for my children from my brother-in-law, a reformed pastor, and had come highly recommended by friends (including as a “favorite book” by friends who I trust on biblical matters on facebook, etc.) I could not have been more disappointed. The tales too long and way too wordy to capture the attention and spiritual imagination of the pre-schoolers to whom it is targeted. It takes fantastic liberties with the biblical texts in ways that are unhelpful in instilling the truth of the Scriptures in their young and malleable minds. I would never want to teach my children to pray the Lord’s prayer in any way additional than using the biblical text. What is so hard about adage “Our Father” that Ms. Lloyd-Jones had to water it down to “Daddy”.
The book also goes to fantastic pains to spell out the meaning of the biblical text, not permanently accurately and certainly lacking any room for the hint that is contained in the text. This is also not how I want my children to learn to read and meditate on the Scriptures.
We worked through this book one tale at a time. It was painful, but agreed the endorsements I wanted to give it a chance. I’m far from being a hard-core literalist (see above), but the liberties taken with the text and the hammer over your head approach to some of the tales was just way too much for me. I couldn’t wait to place this one away and return to the very brilliant Read and Learn Bible produced by the American Bible Society.
