This book was really excellent up until the last part. Trying not to spoil the ending – the ending just didn’t make sense. The actions of a character completely did not make sense and I establish such a disconnect from the point you know the huge secret to the rest of the book. I gave this a 3 as it’s an okay read overall. Don’t reflect I would ready any additional book by this leader.

After devouring both Starvation Lake and The Hanging Tree, I’m recommending Bryan Gruley to all my reading friends. Both books have the vibe of a Dennis Lehane novel, and I’d rank The Hanging Tree with the very best of the Lehane books.
I reflect the characters are honest and appealing, you feel the social structure of tiny town life, and huge and tiny squabbles are regularly settled on the hockey ice.
I can’t wait to see what Gruley comes up with next, he has a new loyal reader.

Gruley is a fantastic tale teller… knows how to paint plain pictures w words. Felt as if I had spent a few days following Gus around in Gruley’s fictional town of Starvation Lake. I want to hang out at Enrights and have breakfast at Audrey’s. I also loved the trips and tours downstate. Melvindale… by the Rouge Plant… my daughter played AAA hockey there a few years ago! Loved Gruley’s characters and settings.

Bryan Gruley continues the tale of Gus Carpenter,a character first seen in STARVATION LAKE. Gus has some issues, personal and professional. He’s a very flawed individual, which is fantastic for readers as we can watch him grow.
THE HANGING TREE had him dealing, again, with professional issues as well as personal problems from his past. The professional issue has to do with a tale about a local man wanting to donate a new hockey rink. Gus wants to know where the money is, and persists in asking that question. The personal issue is a tough one. An ancient girlfriend, and second cousin, has been establish hanging from a local landmark, the Shoe Tree. Everyone wants it to be the suicide it so obviously appears to be, except Gus. He investigates Gracie McBride’s life since she left Starvation Lake a long time ago, and what he finds isn’t what he had hoped for.
For hockey fans, Gruley writes wonderfully about the sport. For non-hockey types, he writes wonderfully about people and places. The mystery is excellent, the suspense is all there. Keep it up!

The Hanging Tree is a well-told tale with an appealing ending. The second in the Starvation Lake series, the characters from the first novel take on new and different dimensions. I read the book over three day period. Certainly a page-turner.
