In The Graveyard Book, Neil Gaiman has made a charming allegory of childhood. Although the book opens with a scary scene–a family tree is stabbed to death by “a man named Jack” –the tale quickly moves into more child-friendly storytelling. The sole survivor of the attack–an 18-month-ancient baby–escapes his crib and his house, and toddles to a nearby graveyard. Quickly recognizing that the baby is orphaned, the graveyard’s ghostly residents adopt him, name him Nobody (“Bod”), and allow him to live in their tomb. Taking inspiration from Kipling’s The Jungle Book, Gaiman describes how the kid navigates among the headstones, asking a lot of questions and alternative up the tricks of the living and the dead. In serial-like episodes, the tale follows Bod’s progress as he grows from baby to teen, learning life’s lessons amid a cadre of the long-dead, ghouls, witches, intermittent human interlopers. A pallid, nocturnal guardian named Silas ensures that Bod receives food, books, and anything else he might need from the human world. Whenever the boy strays from his usual play among the headstones, he finds new dangers, learns his limitations and strengths, and buys the skills he needs to survive within the confines of the graveyard and in wider world beyond. The tale was very excellent and my son really loved. I was disappointed though, because the book arrived with two torn pages and I bought it BRAND NEW! Had I known that the book would arrive with torn pages, I would have rather bought a used book!

I am amazed that this book has won awards — I marvel about the judges who voted for this completely unbefitting book. The book revolves around graveyards, murder, ghosts and a child called Nobody. Being called nobody certainly would not improve self esteem. This is a horrible, highly negative book.

I cannot judge this book was chosen as the winner by Caldecott this year. Why do we need to theme our children to such hideous scary stuff. Reading the daily paper is scary enough–why recommend a book like this. I bought the book out of interest in kid literature and I reflect it is way off the beaten path of additional prize winners. I would not recommend it for any of my child acquaintances nor would I bother to teach it as a teacher. Thank goodness I am retired. Sheila School

I do not know the interest in this book. The first page creeped me out. A children’s AWARD winning book based on a mass murder of a family tree. We are dragging our kids through darker and creepier places all the time. Can we stop? Can we stop aplauding it by handing out awards? I read, then skimmed, then gave up. I can reflect of waaaay better books.

neil gaiman is slowly changing from a fantastic and imaginative leader to a horrible leader indeed. in this novel,the newest one, theg raveyard book all you have to do is read the first two hcpaters andthe last. really thats all you need to read to know the tale. everything in the middle is just garbage,filler and a lot of filler.
