Parts of this book were very enjoyable because of the imaginative writing style of Mr. Demille. But the characters were not imaginative and the tale not credible. So, overall, the book fell flat for me.

I recently bought a copy of The Gold Coast and was pleased to receive it quickly as stated on the manner of language schedule. But when I received it I was a bit surprised that the entire book had ancient and yellowed pages. It reminded me of a book I could have gotten for 50 cents at a yard sale rather than one that I had paid $6.00 plus the shipping to receive. Also I guess I had made a mistake in ordering, because I had thought that since this was an older book, I was getting a hard take in rather than an ancient paperback. I was disappointed but DeMille is lots of fun to read.

While I have considered Nelson DeMille one of my favorite authors for years, I was incredibly disappointed with this book. There’s not much of a plot and, while the main character is laugh-out-loud amusing and sarcastic, the tale, told as a narrative, misses a lot. Why is the Don so appealing to John & Susan? Why did what happened at the end take place? I just couldn’t see it. Also, there’s way too much description of places and history – so much so that my eyes tended to glaze over. Half way through the book (over 300 pages, at the middle point), we had just gotten through introductions of the masses of people and into the basic “plot” of the tale. Maybe that was my problem – there was no plot. I’m used to DeMille’s books going somewhere – but this was much different. I’m so disappointed I don’t know if I want to crack into the 3 additional DeMille books that I haven’t read yet.

“The Gold Coast” was my first Nelson DeMille book and I establish it to be a chore to read. That is because the first half of the book is basically a long-winded description of the main characters and in particular, about the extravagence of the Gold Coast, with small plot development. Page after page of thoughts, feelings, descriptions of rooms in a mansion or a restaurant, thoughts about friends or so-called friends must be thumbed through before there is any action to get excited about. It wasn’t until about Page 400 or so before DeMille gets into the meat of the tale, which is the purpose of the relationship between the protagionist John Sutter and his national, Mafia don Bellarosa. From that point it gets appealing, but winds up with a less than satisfying end, so it’s a hard book to get excited about and recommend to others.
I have since read DeMille’s book “The Charm School”, which is a much better book. I attribute this to the fact that “The Gold Coast” is written in the first person while “The Charm School” is written in the third person, the ex- lending itself to much more rambling. I also reflect that DeMille is probably a serious researcher of the subjects of his books and feels he has to incorporate that knowledge whenever he can, whether it advances the tale or not. This book could have easily covered the same material in 200 less pages and not missed much as far as telling the tale.
I won’t give up on DeMille because he can be amusing and he writes dialog well, but he needs to tense up things up a small more. I also will be interested to see how Hollywood treats “The Gold Coast” as a movie is being made with Al Pacino already cast to star (as the Don, I assume).
