   The additional 2 reviews accurately clarify the contents of “The Furniture Doctor”, but they fail to mention how much fun it is to read. George Grotz is a riot. There is hardly a paragraph in the book that won’t make you laugh. This is a fantastic way to learn the ins and outs of all things furniture-ish.

   Outstanding book for novice refinishers. Save a lot of time using reamalgamation on shellac and lacquer.

   I like this book! Years ago there was a paint store in my town located minutes from a large retirement community. I noticed that retired painters would congregate in the shop and pass the time talking about paint and techniques with the owner. I learned more from persons gents that I could have ever selected up from persons glossy books that promise all you’ll ever need to know and more. This book reminds me of persons afternoons. Filled with sensible information that you will not find elsewhere. I have been restoring and refinishing wood for more than 30 years, and when I have a problem I turn to my copy of this book first.

   The anecdotes are sort of amusing, in a lame kind of way. The change in equipment since this was first written in the ’60s has made any practical value trivial. The 1983 version doesn’t seem to have been a significant update. It’s mostly an appealing manufactured article of where woodworking/refinishing was before the explosion of new tools, techniques, and materials changed much. I bought a very cheap used copy, I wouldn’t invest much more than that.

   So what if it’s ancient? This is my go-to book for anything additional than a major re-erect. It has nothing fancy; no color pictures; just down home common sense methods to dealing with repairs. You can still find most of the materials he refers to and it’s simple to find modern day equivalents for persons you can’t.

   Some of the most frequently used books in my shop library were written 20-100 years ago. The methods are usually simpler and work better; plus there’s small fluff.
