Product Description
First came the postwar High, then the Awakening of the ’60s and ’70s, and now the Unraveling. This audacious and provocative book tells us what to expect just beyond the start of the next century. Are you ready for the Fourth Turning?
Strauss and Howe will change the way you see the world–and your place in it. In The Fourth Turning, they apply their generational theories to the cycles of history and locate America in the middle of an unraveling period, on the brink of a crisis. How you prepare for this crisis–the Fourth Turning–is intimately connected to the mood and attitude of your particular generation. Are you one of the can-do “GI generation,” who triumphed in the last crisis? Do you belong to the mediating “Silent Majority,” who loved the 1950s High? Do you fall into the “awakened” Boomer category of the 1970s and 1980s, or are you a Gen-Xer struggling to adapt to our splintering world? Whatever your stage of life, The Fourth Turning offers bold predictions about how all of us can prepare, individually and collectively, for America’s next rendezvous with destiny.Amazon.com Review
The Fourth Turning continues the project of mapping out the place of generations in history, a project begun in the authors’ earlier books Generations and 13th Gen. If millennial fever takes hold, The Fourth Turning may be only the first of an impending wave of pseudo-scholarly tracts prognosticating future (but imminent!) doom as we collectively close the books on this millennium. Persons expecting a serious or dry tome might be place off by the authors’ taste for bulleted text and catchy phrasings, but can you blame these guys for wanting to make impending peril as exciting as possible? After all, they reflect we are headed toward “events on par with the Revolution, the Civil War, or World War II” in the next 20 years. Mixing levelheaded understanding of present generational divisions, with some honestly broad generalizations, Strauss and Howe promise to go from history to prophecy. Fans of Future Shock, Megatrends, or Powershift will be familiar with the authors’ style of writing and not at all place off by the book’s reach or style. Their take on history provides an intriguing (if not permanently reliable) lens through which to view the past, present, and maybe even the future.

What a bunch of simplistic, wordy, and mindless gibberish. This kind of “Junk History” contributes nothing to the advancement of mankind’s journey. It only serves to feed the simplistic and bone idle mind to make overdrawn conclusions and in this case this tome tends to lean to the right on the political spectrum. Never has the nation and the world been in such dire need of rational and sound thinking to guide us through this hard time.
Yet, we are now turing(no pun proposed) to this kind of junk thinking, simplistic answers from religious zealots and useless polemics from mindless politicians. If our species is to survive and our enlightened culture to progress, we must reject such simplistic models…the thinking minds among us must do the hard work necessary to learn rational solutions to our most perplexing problems. This book does not contribute to this endeavor.

Many people have tried to make a theory of history. All failed. It appealing that although many people have seen cyclic patterns in history. Everyone seem to have different times.
Unless you really know your American history you are going it hard to get though this book. I establish that some of the past facts used to justify the theory pretty weak. For example to aver that the sinking of the Lusitania in world war 1 was as much a reason to go to war as Pearl Harbor in world war 2.

they make bold statements and present theory as fact. very intriguing on the surface, but frankly irritating in the lack of scientific process when examined closely. its the “prophesy” of their predictions that we are all interested in, i would imagine, and that was sufficiently vague to satisfy all.

An extraordinary work of erudition and past analysis. An incredible work. BUY IT AND STUDY IT!!

a horrid mix consisting of one part past riffing, one part astrology, and one part appealing correlation of data patterns. The combined effect is small more than a condescending attempt at palm reading.
That being said, some of the predictions were spot on but ultimately the suggestions as to how to deal with the looming catastrophe has us all being excellent small docile unquestioning citizens. It’s sad that people take this tripe seriously.
I would suggest the book ‘Worldchanging: A User’s Guide for the 21st Century’ as a replacement for for some real-world solutions to real-world problems.
